"Year One" of the series is written by Tom Taylor (Star Wars – Blood TiesStar Wars – Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir) and drawn by artists Bruno Redondo, Jheremy Raapack (Batman – Arkham Unhinged, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe – Origins of Eternia), Mike S. Miller, Tom Derenick and many more, which starts as a prequel that ends up focusing on the events of the game. Since the story is set in an alternate reality, many of our regular continuity doesn't fit here and the plot is continued in "Year Two".

So she goes undercover as a patient there but the clown eventually caught her disguise and her confidence on face of his madness impressed him. Even though her supervisor, Dr. Sterano, discovered their secret affair, she was taken to Ace Chemical Processing Plant by Joker and hurled into the chemical vats.

Joker fished her out from the bottom of vat but she was drastically changed by then both physically and mentally, and the maniac dubbed her Harley Quinn. They became lovers and after a while Joker left her as he got bored. She then made a uniform for herself. Black Canary stopped her from an unchecked homicidal binge and she is taken to Belle Reve Penitentiary.

Amanda Waller then recruited her to her secret command unit called Task Force X, AKA Suicide Squad. After their first mission (Kicked in the Teeth), she managed to escape the prison while creating a prison riot. She was later kidnapped and tortured by The Joker when the maniac was up against the entire Bat-Family as a part of his ploy against his arc-nemesis; The Dark Knight (Death of the Family).

In wake of The New 52, the second monthly ongoing volume of Detective Comics takes things straight high with Batman and The Joker. The plot was both written and drawn by Tony Daniel (Deathstroke – New 52, Justice League – New 52), who brings the same psychological thriller vibe into Detective Comics again. Events taken in this storyline, such as a confrontation of Batman with G.C.P.D. forces and Joker, carries some resemblance to Frank Miller's iconic The Dark Knight Returns book. Also, the opening splash-page of the first issue is an homage to another panel from All-Star Batman and Robin by artist Jim Lee (Batman – Hush, Superman – For Tomorrow). Collecting issues #01-07 from The New 52's Detective Comics monthly series, this storyline serves as a prologue for 2013's DC Comics crossover event "Death of the Family".

As a tie-in prequel back-story to the 2009’s smash-hit game Batman – Arkham City, a five issue limited series of the same name was published by DC Comics in the same year. This comic book tale was written by famous Batman veteran Paul Dini (Justice League, Justice League Unlimited) and illustrated by artist Carlos D'Anda (Deathblow, JLA – Kid Amazo). This story is a link up to the first two games of the Arkham series; Batman – Arkham Asylum and Batman – Arkham City. Following the success of this limited series, a follow up monthly ongoing titled “Batman – Arkham Unhinged” was released by DC Comics in 2011, which was a continuation of the chronicles that took place in this book.
