Batman – The War of Jokes and Riddles | Comics

In a war between The Joker and Riddler, The Dark Knight tries his best to save Gotham City from burning down.

Following Batman's debut as a vigilante on Gotham City, he successfully decreased the increasing crime rate of the city by putting many super criminals behind bars. During the second year of his crime-fighting, one of his archenemy named Red Hood One came back and became known as The Joker.

He went on a senseless killing spree of comedians who was unable to make him laugh and no one could figure out why. Commissioner Gordon tried to apprehend the madman but more civilian died as well as his own men during his attempts.

Stuck inside of GCPD, master strategist and evil genius Riddler had became a means to solve crimes for them. Thinking he has solved the riddle of Joker's massive killings, he decides to escape and he did so by threatening the confronting group of guards of knowing about their loved ones.

He finds Joker and suggests that they team up to beat Batman together as the clown has lost the ability to laugh because of always being halted by him. The Joker shot him in the stomach after dismissing the idea and left him for dead.

Batman came in slightly late to stop this and chased Joker knowing Riddler will survive the gunshot wound. It was from that moment when Edward Nygma started amassing super-villains to fight by his side against the maniacal clown.

Evil that inherited Gotham has parted into two and started ripping each other. Joker tells Carmine Falcone over phone to kill Riddler but when his men failed to do so because of the intervention of Poison Ivy, the clown took out all his men and operation as well before killing his mother Carmen.

A common criminal and former associate of The Joker named Charles Brown is approached by Batman to be a mole in his former boss's gang and set up a meeting. That plan flipped when Riddler figured it out and had him abducted by Clayface to confront about it and he also told this to Batman.

The meeting was a mess and Joker sends him to Batman wired with fake explosives while Riddler poisoned his son. With that tragedy becoming a motivation, Charlie eventually become the Kite-Man and thus, a new villain is born.

By then only Catwoman haven't joined any sides and as Gordon approached the villains for a truce, all they wanted was Batman. Deadshot and Deathstroke were sent to kill the Bat but they got busy trying to kill each other with the causality of 62 civilians in five days.

Batman finally managed to stop them and got Floyd Lawton hospitalized in a fit of rage. He then plans to do something that even the Riddler never saw coming and the endgame of his decision would made him what he is today.

Batman – The War of Jokes and Riddles

Coming from the best-selling creative team of Tom King (Batman – I Am Bane, Batman – I Am Gotham) and Mikel Janín (Justice League Dark, Superman – The Final Days of Superman) from DC Rebirth, "The War of Jokes and Riddles" is an eight-part epic saga from Batman's past in the Prime Earth continuity.

It all begin in issue #24 of the third ongoing volume of Batman, where The Dark Knight finally proposes Catwoman to marry him and before she can answer, he decides to let her know of an event that no one else knows about. Writer King took a unique approach in exploring Batman's early years with two of his arch-nemesis on his tail.

The storyline collects issues #25-32 from the third Batman monthly series from DC Comics and features appearances of the villains including Clayface, Cluemaster, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Firefly, Killer Croc, Kite-Man, Mad Hatter, Man-Bat, Mister Freeze, Mister Zsasz, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Solomon Grundy, Two-Face and Ventriloquist, aside from the two main antagonists.

Even though the story is told in the DC Rebirth era, the events of the book actually took place not long after the infamous "Zero Year". Coincidentally, that is also the rising point of both The Joker and Riddler in the Prime Earth continuity.

The witch takes out the security system of the building and they are attacked by security personnel. On top floor, Lex was trying to make Waller honest about her true purpose of coming here and he mentions about her recent encounter with The People and their Annihilation Brigade, which shocks her.

At downstairs, the Suicide Squad is attacked by a Bizarro army that wrecks havoc and Luthor now sees what is going on under his nose. He quickly changes into his warsuit and engages Task Force X right on.

Both parties agree to cut the crap and as Waller was about to ask for what she came here for, Luthor again hands her the gift; Kryptonite. With that alien meteorite at her disposal Amanda Waller authorizes her men at Belle Reve to operate and insert a Kryptonite Neural Bomb inside the head of General Zod.

After sending Boomerang for another secret solo mission aside from his team, Waller sends the Suicide Squad to Zimbabwe along with Zod to confront the Annihilation Brigade once again and this time, she only expects victory.

The Kryptonian despot unleashes his mad rage onto them and inside they find hundreds of meta-humans locked up in an attempt to create an International Suicide Squad by The People. General Zod damaged the containment suit of Tunguska.

As he was about to explode, Rick order Enchantress to teleport them all out and grabs Harley at the last moment, saving her. Digger Harkness also carried out Waller's plan of taking out the mole of The People within their ranks as well.

Being hurt in his pride, General Zod decides to remove the Kryptonite Bomb from his brain and eventually does so by using his heat-vision, leaving his skull wide open. He then went on a berserker rampage inside Belle Reve Penitentiary and unleashes an army of Kryptonian wraiths after trapping the prison inside The Black Vault.

As he was tearing the place apart and giving Task Force X one of the toughest times of their lives, Cyborg Superman and The Eradicator arrives out of nowhere to recruit him for their Superman Revenge Squad.

Artists Tony Daniel (Deathstroke – New 52, Justice League – New 52), Neil Edwards, Sandu Florea, Stjepan Sejic and Le Beau L. Underwood have assisted by collaborating. Aside from these fine pencillers, Otto Schmidt (Green Arrow – Emerald Outlaw, Green Arrow – Island of Scars) and Whilce Portacio (Spawn, Star Wars) provided a few variant covers for the story arc.

Devastation and Enslavement

Following the previous events that took place with the members of Task Force X, this plotline has taken things with the Squad a bit up with the involvement of General Zod and tying into "The New World" story from Action Comics series by bringing Cyborg Superman and The Eradicator into the mix.

The weird part of the whole storyline seemed like the time when Harley Quinn and Rick Flag got hooked up for no apparent reason. Finally, one of the Squad members is going to bite the dust and another will take the place.

Defenders – Diamonds Are Forever | Comics

Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage must form The Defenders to keep the streets safe from a deadly enemy of past.

Harlem's very own bulletproof man Luke Cage was coming back home from the market and talking to some schoolgirls of the neighborhood when he is suddenly ambushed with a rocket launcher. Cage quickly jumped off to save the bystanders.

He then rushed to a nearby building rooftop to chase the assailant but found a few diamond on the ground. He then receives a call and went to hospital to see his wife Jessica Jones, who was also attacked in her Alias Investigations Office and left heavily injured.

Daredevil came following them as someone attacked his alter ego Matt Murdock too in broad daylight and points out that someone has targeted four of them. Before Luke could ask about the fourth victim, Danny Rand, the Iron Fist was also marked.

As they were discussing who it could be, Jessica regains consciousness only to reveals it was Diamondback who came at her office to talk to her about a recent raid by vigilante hero Daredevil, Iron Fist and her husband Luke Cage at Club Ultimate. When she asks him to leave, he shot at her and then left some diamonds by her side.

Black Cat then goes to meet Diamondback at his club and asks him about his intention, also pointing out his unusual return from being dead. As he explains his plan to take over New York while Hammerhead makes a call to Luke Cage to inform him on Willis Stryker.

Shortly, Cage comes crashing down seeking revenge over Willis for shooting his wife but the latter came prepared as he incapacitates Luke with toxic dust and left him to die after giving him a severe beating while Black Cat watched it all in horror.

Jessica meets Daredevil and Iron Fist in a bar as her investigation gave her no lead on Diamondback so far and Matt proposes that they should team up. She rushes to Night Nurse's clinic as soon as she hears Luke's news. With assistance from Vampire Hunter Blade, Nurse Linda Carter eventually manages to save Luke.

Jessica goes straight up to Club Ultimate to confront Diamondback as Matt and Danny join her but the villain surprisingly overpowers them all and ran. The trio then gave him a chase on street only to be gunned down by another vigilante known as The Punisher.

Danny, Jessica and Matt wake up at Night Nurse's clinic beside Luke Cake, who is surprised to hear that Frank Castle has actually shot at them. While Daredevil and Luke cage goes to apprehend Castle for some questioning, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist decide to take on Diamondback.

However, Willis tossed Jessica within her car when he spotted her and then broke Danny's back after blocking one of his powerful chi-Punch with ease. The mean street of New York now just got even meaner with their entire rampage and this marks a new formation of The Defenders.

Marvel's The Defenders
television series on online streaming-service Netflix was one of the hottest buzz in 2017 and to catch up with the show, Marvel Comics decided to bring back Defenders monthly ongoing series in publication.

Also, it followed the TV line-up for heroes by putting Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist together to reform the band once again. The plot was conceived by veteran writer Brian Michael Bendis (Avengers Disassembled, House of M) and artist David Marquez (Civil War II, Invincible Iron Man – Reboot) assisted him in envisioning the entire story with his sensational artwork.

The Punisher Strikes!

They brought back one of the oldest villain from Luke Cage's life who was dead for a long time and then just to make things a bit more interesting, Marvel dropped The Punisher in the story. Looks like Willis Stryker himself was quite a handful for the four of the Defenders of New York with his newfound enhanced strength.

There was a small cameo of Elektra, who is marking her return into their lives. When this is all set and done, a certain Merc with a Mouth is called in by private eye Jessica Jones to lend a hand or two in upcoming arc "Kingpins of New York".

Cable – Conquest | Comics

Cable starts a centuries-spanning chase from modern day to dawn of time to save reality from a villain named Conquest.

Time-travelling mutant Cable goes back to Arizona territory of 1874 and walks into a bar. No sooner had he entered, he is confronted by four locals with future-tech guns after he tossed one of them out and soon took care of the rest.

Since all of them were well aware of him coming, he interrogates one of them by hanging him upside down to find out what the person was after that he came here chasing through time stream. That guy took him to a time marker burned into rocks where Cable's target vanished and led him to feudal Japan.

Arriving near a village, Cable finds it entirely on flames and everyone in it murdered except for a woman and her son, who informed him that men with swords of fire did this. Tracking the attackers from the village, he came across a group of Rōnin who engaged him in a high-tech sword fight and even sliced his bionic arm off.

In a flashback, the man Cable has been chasing after approaches lord Daimyo Amaru Hideyoshi for his aid but left the place in flames when he was insulted and rejected before he met those Rōnins in a group.

As a traveller, he apprached the group of Rōnins and armed them with weapons to deal with Nathan Summers. Using his telekinetic powers, not only did he defeat entire Rōnin squad single-handedly but he took his severed arm back too.

Nathan forced the last Rōnin to show him the time marker and this time, he jumped back to year 1121 at Yucatán Coast of Mayan Civilization. Upon arriving, he is immediately attacked by some locals with bird-like high-tech wings and Cable ended up saving a priest named Kagan from them.

After Nate defeated all the ensuing attackers, Kagan greets Cable before taking him to his temple. He reveals that the man he's after is known as Conquest has came to his city looking for an ancient relic which belonged to a Time Sword, which was created by The Eternals.

It was destroyed by The Inhumans during Eternals/Inhumans War. Then broken pieces of the sword were scattered throughout various point of history by its power. Conquest wants to assemble all shattered pieces to re-forge Time Sword so that he can pierce through time and change history as he sees fit.

For a priest, Kagan seem to have a lot of knowledge about Time Sword and he informs all of it's history to Nate. After fighting a couple of dozens more of corrupted locals devoted to Conquest, Cable managed to get to time marker of this era and traveled back to Conquest's current location in 1908's Russia.

Looks like Conquest have already managed to collect three pieces and needs the remaining two to make it whole again before Cable can finally stop him and save the future from becoming a mess.

Cable – Conquest

Following the aftermath of "Inhumans Vs. X-Men" crossover event, Marvel Comics has decided to re-launch a few of their monthly ongoing titles once again as part of "ResurrXion" event. The storyline "Conquest" collects issues #01-05 from the third monthly series of Cable and with that, Askani'son returns to action once again.

So, comic-book writer James Robinson (Age of Ultron Vs. Marvel Zombies, Armor Wars – Warzones!) and artist Carlos Pacheco (Bishop, Fantastic Four) was brought in to conceive a new plot for first story-arc "Conquest" for third monthly volume of Cable. Artist Dale Keown (Darkness/Hulk, Hulk/Pitt) was also roped in to provide cover art for all the issues involved in this plot.

Behold, Conquest!

Even though Cable is an honorary member of X-Men, very often his own responsibility of watching over time stream puts him into solo missions. The story introduces a new time-travelling rival for him named Conquest, who had no prior history of tangling with him or any of the other Marvel characters though.

The motives of this new villain are somewhat similar to Kang the Conqueror but only to a much smaller scale of course that Nathan alone can handle with some struggle. However, there are chances that this guy throws the fate of the universe into jeopardy in foreseeable future that forces to assemble The Avengers and Fantastic Four alongside the X-Men.

Later, Batman is nowhere to be found which even surprises Damian. Robin, Superboy and Superman go on a patrol over Hamilton County to locate Bruce but are interrupted by a giant squid creature they fought before in the arctic (Son of Superman).

With much less effort, the trio handled the situation but it was Jon's brash actions that saved lives in the end. Superman heads to Deadman's Swamp after sending the boys home. Damian and Jon were bickering while they were returning and as it started to become a fight, Kathy intervenes by chocking him up in the air with her telekinesis.

She even managed to redirect Jon's heat-vision. Meanwhile, Superman discovers Batman, Frankenstein, Robin, The Bride and many others stuck in some containment underground. Back home, Lois was getting worried upon having no words from her husband or son and go out investigate.

She was eventually stopped by Cobb Branden and Superman quickly rushed to the spot hearing her cry. Cobb is soon taken care of and Clark flies off with Lois.

She points out that lately, Hamilton County has become a target for various monstrosities and as he tries to help the people, Lois is severely injured in this chaos. Even though it was a plot set on solo Superman comic series, the primary focus revolves around Clark's son Jon Kent, the new Superboy. There is even a scene where Clark lectures Jon about the consequences of choices he made much like the way actor Kevin Costner's character Jonathan Kent does to a young Clark Kent in 2013's Man of Steel film.

In pre-Flashpoint reality, Manchester Black used to hang out with his super-team The Elite but this Prime Earth version is aided by the group of Super-Elite. The story will be going onward followed by "Hopes and Fears" storyline as the series advances.

Star Wars – Darth Vader – Imperial Machine | Comics

Before he became the fearsome Dark Lord of Sith, Darth Vader took a journey for his legendary red lightsaber.

Right after his transforming into Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker was defeated and his disfigured body was left on volcanic planet Mustafar by his former master Obi-Wan Kenobi. Darth Sidious then came to retrieve his burnt body and placed it in a cybernetic suit to save his life at that moment.

As he gained consciousness, Vader learns that his wife Padmé is no more and now he is left with pain and rage in his life. Palpatine asks him whether he wants to live with this pain or just simply die and Anakin expresses his wish to live only to be struck by his masters' powerful Force-lightning.

Palpatine asks Vader to defend himself with his lightsaber but he states that he has already lost it on Mustafar. After warning him never to touch him again with the Force, Sidious suggests that Vader let go of his personal vendetta and peruse serving Galactic Empire for greater good.

He explains to his apprentice how both Jedi and Sith have different color of lightsaber and how to turn one into red. He drops Lord Vader on a desert planet of Mid Rim to set on a journey to find out a Jedi and take his lightsaber from him.

Darth Vader goes looking for his ship to reclaim it from a group of pirates that was prepared for him by The Emperor and was stolen earlier. He visits a nearby Jedi outpost on Brighthome for some information he needed to start his quest, which was guarded by clone troopers.

He killed them all for blowing off some steam instead of providing them security codes to pass. Vader looked for any Jedi who have taken the Barash vow before Order 66 and found it in Jedi Master Kirak Infil'a who is residing on river moon of Al'doleem.

Master Infil'a has already sensed that a Dark Lord of Sith is coming for him and as soon as Vader sees him, he unsuccessfully tries to Force choke Infil'a, who threw him off balance by hitting him with a Force blast in counter attack. The Jedi invited The Dark Lord on top of mountain before unleashing currents of a river flowing on him.

Cutting a way through using the Force, Vader conquered all obstacles thrown at him and eventually confronted the seasoned Jedi Master in a brief battle. He is quickly defeated by Master Infil'a and then gets thrown from top of the mountain.

Vader reassembles his cybernetic body with scrap parts using the Force to face Master Infil'a in a final battle this time. Thinking the Sith Lord has finally perished, Infil'a was preparing to go on a hunt for Vader's true master to put an end to Sith but then he realized that his enemy has survived somehow.

Now, Vader challenges the Jedi Master once again and fought him with ruthless efficiency. Once he is done, he still has to bleed the kyber crystal he took out from the fallen Jedi's lightsaber to complete his weapon for a few more tasks left to complete for his master.

Star Wars – Darth Vader – Imperial Machine

The second monthly ongoing volume of Darth Vader starts publishing from Marvel Comics in 2017 and first story arc of the series is titled "Imperial Machine". The story contains issues #01-06 from Star Wars spin-off series featuring Vader and is set almost immediately after the events of "Revenge of the Sith".

Renowned comic-book writer Charles Soule (Death of Wolverine – The Logan Legacy, Death of Wolverine – The Weapon X Program) was tasked to form this plot and he was aided by artist Giuseppe Camuncoli (Amazing Spider-Man, Superior Spider-Man) to portray his visions.

The Lost Jedi Master

"Imperial Machine" features a self-exiled Jedi Master named Kirak Infil'a, whom many has never even heard of and he is the first Jedi that Vader has fought right after his body was encased in a cybernetic suit. Also, this story explores an interesting theme on colors of the lightsaber that Jedi or Sith wields.

When Vader was trying to corrupt kyber crystal within the lightsaber he took from Infil'a, it showed him a different reality of what could've actually happened but The Dark Lord of Sith refuses that idea and sticked to his vengeful path.
