Astonishing X-Men – Life of X | Comics

When world's most powerful telepaths are attacked by an unforeseen enemy, the X-Men enter astral plane to confront it.

Mutants around the world with psychic abilities are suddenly being attacked and they starts dying but just because most of them secluded themselves from the rest, these deaths gone unnoticed at the very beginning.

When it attacked Betsy Braddock AKA Psylocke when she was in London, she sent out a distress psychic call to fellow mutants that reached out to Angel, Bishop, Gambit, Fantomex, Old Man Logan and Rogue who were coincidentally in close range for various different reasons of their own. Betsy's psychic manifestation took shape of a giant butterfly over The Shard building.

Soon, Logan and Rogue arrives in Blackbird with the latter decides to fly to Betsy for aiding her. As she reaches near, Psylocke's psychic blades starts attacking as a defense mechanism and when they came back around, Angel comes following to save Rogue by shielding her with his wings.

Logan tries to divert rest of the blades towards him from Gambit, Fantomex and the crowd of London. When Bishop arrives too, Rogue asks him to get rid of the energy she's about to absorb from Psylocke which has infected her. With some effort, they managed to do that and apparently saved the day for that moment.

Original X-Men member Beast also arrives on the spot to everyone's surprise as he has received the distress psychic call too. Psylocke reveals that the powerful mutant Amahl Farouk is back as the Shadow King once again and he want all of them, so that he can crawl back to real-world and infect it's populace with his poison.

She suggests that they travel to the Astral Plane to fight Shadow King and make sure that he never steps into our world. Otherwise, he will strike at psychics like Emma Frost, Jean Grey, Quentin Quire and Stepford Cuckoos next to make them his mind-slaves.

Logan voluntarily agrees to go inside since he already spent many years in his own timeline to fight the menacing Shadow King. The rest of them followed him as Angel stays behind to aid Betsy just in case and to make sure his Archangel persona stays in check.

Bishop wanted to better the odds if one of their friends wakes up as Farouk's pawn by staying with Betsy and Warren. Just as they entered the Astral Plane, Shadow King senses their presence almost immediately and prepares himself as well as a special prisoner of his for a game with the lives of these X-Men.

Inside, they discover themselves as audience in a theater for a play about their lives but Logan realizes that something weird is going on and he ended up killing a zombie-version of Jean Grey, which triggered other characters present to attack the X-Men.

During their fight, Logan deduces that Hank McCoy among them is actually one of their old enemies, the mutant shape-shifter Mystique just by observing her movements. They all willingly enter three psychic doors presented to them when they realized that someone aside from Farouk is on Astral Plane is secretly helping them.

Astonishing X-Men – Life of X

The fourth monthly ongoing volume of Astonishing X-Men is launched and it begins with the six-part long "Life of X" storyline from Marvel Comics in 2018, which collected issues #01-06 of the series.

To pen out this one, comic-book writer Charles Soule (Civil War II, Death of Wolverine) was hired and he received assistance from artists Carlos Pacheco (Fantastic Four, Inhumans), Ed McGuinness (Deadpool, Guardians of The Galaxy), Jim Cheung (Avengers – The Children's Crusade, New Avengers – Illuminati), Mike Del Mundo (Elektra – Bloodlines, Elektra – Reverence) and Mike Deodato Jr. (New Avengers, Secret Avengers), who helped with cover art and illustrations.

"Life of X" reassembles many of the former X-Men members as well as outcasts like Fantomex and Mystique, both of whom either worked with the team or any of the team members previously on occasion.

Plus, this one brings one of the oldest villains Shadow King that these mutant superheroes have faced many times on their earlier days and a long-deceased character back again. Even though the ending of the story is portrayed like a conclusion, for some weird reasons, it still feels like a mild cliffhanger though.

X-Men Gold – Back To The Basics | Comics

Long before Professor Xavier started training his mutant students, X-Men were always feared by humans unlike other heroes from teams like The Avengers or Fantastic Four. With their recent war with The Inhumans, that phobia has returned again to cause mass hysteria. Forming a new team with Colossus, Nightcrawler, Old Man Logan, Rachel Grey as Prestige and Storm, Kitty Pryde leads X-Men as their current leader to stop an attack from Terrax the Tamer. Rachel was hoping for an Avenger or Champion member to show up but Logan asks for their leader's instruction.

It took all of their effort just to defeat Terrax and considerable amount of property damage. Upon defeating him with some solid team-work, Kitty talks to civilians present at scene about earning their trust back again and develop a positive image for their race but no one is ready to listen to them. Back at home, On top of that, they received an invoice from New York's City Register for a lease on Central Park, where Xavier Institute is currently situated. Ororo and Kurt argue about whether situation has improved for them or not, while Rachel practices in Danger Room alongside Armor and Rockslide.

Piotr was asking Katya if she is up for having dinner together but she points out how noting is as simple as that between them. Their little talk is suddenly interrupted when the new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attacks the city and they had to run. At United Nations building, X-Men confronts newest Brotherhood members Avalanche, Cleevus, Magma, Masque and Pyro. Logan is badly burnt by former ally Magma, as they tried to talk her out and then quickly taken away by Kurt to safety, where they both stumbled onto one of their old enemies; mutant hypnotist Mesmero.

He sends Kurt away using his regained power and took Logan to his secret hideout. Rest of the team was defeated by remaining X-Men members but all Brotherhood members fled to avoid arrest. Director Lydia Nance of Heritage Initiative was already commenting about a Human/Mutant race war on public media and then mayor of New York gets kidnapped by the Brotherhood. There is a large hidden agenda at play that X-Men later discovers and takes care of. Meanwhile, a mercenary is hunting down mutants in New York City with a deeply-rooted personal vendetta.

Elsewhere, mutant thief and occasional X-Men member Gambit took a job to steal a secret nanotech from a secret lab for an anonymous buyer. Upon learning Olivia Trask has hired him and it was a swarm of self-replicating nanites, he chooses not to deliver. Which eventually caused a stir among two parties and accidentally the nanites became a self-aware Sentinel by merging itself with nearby available computer systems. It quickly overpowers Gambit, then upgraded itself by evolving and engaged all other heroes to create a city-wide havoc.

For first story arc of the series, "Back To The Basics" contains quite a lot of actions and final issue features cameo appearances of Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Deadpool, Human Torch, Ms. Marvel, Nova, Rogue, Squirrel Girl and Totally Awesome Hulk from teams like Champions and Uncanny Avengers, all fighting against a brand-new Sentinel threat that Gambit mistakenly unleashed. For many who do not know, a controversial move by Indonesian artist Ardian Syaf to include hidden political and religious messages in first issue led Marvel to fire him in disciplinary action.

X-Men – Blinded by the Light | Comics
Rogue is mentally troubled after she has recently dealt with the murderous alien entity known as Hecatomb and absorbed the consciousness of eight billion people along with it. All of the members of the team are re-grouping now and Emma Frost tries to help Rogue out by managing the trapped minds inside her. Omega Sentinel suddenly starts acting weirdly and unexpectedly attacks Emma. It is later revealed that she was possessed by a digitized version of Malice. As Wolverine and Beast senses abnormalities in the mansion atmosphere, Lady Mastermind reveals that she is manipulating their minds and allowed The Marauders to sneak attack on them. In the heat of the battle, a betraying Mystique shot and fatally wounded up her step daughter Rogue.

Other X-Men also soon fell under the attack by The Marauders, with Mystique on their side and the X-Mansion is blown. This is perhaps one of the bad fights for the X-Men, as most of them are injured from their previous battles or in shock at the discovery of their recent enemy. Cable is then ambushed by former X-Man and Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death, Gambit and Japanese mutant Sunfire, who attacked him brutally for almost no seeming reason. Cable managed to survive the initial heat of their combine attack and stops Sunfire but soon disappeared from the scene. The Marauders meets Mister Sinister in his secret hideout with the wounded body of Rogue, which the villain may have any use for.

X-Men – The Hunt for Xavier | Comics

At Cape Citadel, Florida, a public controversy is forming regarding the launch of a rocket that is secretly programmed to track and terminate all mutants of the world. The location of the launch also stirs controversy as it was the place where the world known about the existence of mutants as Professor X's original X-Men were fighting against Magneto for the first time. Operating from the shadows, Xavier is seen recruiting Chaos, Crux, Grey King, Landslide, Mercury and Rapture to re-form his dream team of X-Men.

Along with Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Colossus were resting by the pool abroad the cruise ship Titania after the Excalibur team has been disbanded most recently. Calling themselves the X-Men, Xavier's new recruits attacks on board Titania. While Kurt and Peter were busy on crowd-control, these newly assembled mutants abduct Kitty Pryde and take her to their so-called savior.

X-Men – The Hunt for Xavier | Comics

The X-Men team at the X-Mansion is re grouping again after the devastating events of "Operation – Zero Tolerance" and Storm is in charge of the current team. She leads fellow teammates Marrow, Rogue and Wolverine through the tunnels of Washington, D.C., through a series of defensive machines and hidden traps. After their brief meeting with X-Factor liaison Valerie Cooper about the recent developments regarding the missile launch, the X-Men are attacked by their impostors in mid-air, ensuing a battle but Nightcrawler and Colossus came to the rescue.

Afterwards, all of them goes to rescue Shadowcat and breaks her out of there after battling it out with their fake counterparts. Kitty Pryde was brought here in the first place as Xavier explained that during the time Bastion kept him, he was infected with a computer virus that now only she can cure him off. The X-Men flies back home in Blackbird and Xavier seemingly absorbed his fake recruits to take a robotic form, now calling himself Cerebro.

They soon are summoned by Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. to deal with one of their former villain Pyro. The mutant Pyro has good nuts and is flaming out intensely in Nebraska. Not only that, he's been shouting out the name of Professor Charles Xavier all the time. Storm splits the team in two groups, sending Wolverine, Colossus and Gambit after Pyro and led her own team of Marrow, Nightcrawler, Rogue and Shadowcat for crowd control.

As Storm engage to control the situation, Marrow confronts her about Xavier's action on the infamous "Mutant Massacre" event. Since Pyro is infected with the lethal Legacy Virus that is reaching to its ultimate stage, his powers are way out of their regular scale. Even Colossus felt the heat Pyro emitted in his armor mode. The X-Men were finally successful to take him down, but they are still riddled with the question that, why Pyro was frequently calling out for Xavier, when they don't share even a short history together.

After returning to the X-Mansion, they ran a search for Xavier via Cerebro but surprisingly found that currently there are two Xavier around the world! Meanwhile, the real Professor Charles Xavier was forming a new Brotherhood of Mutants consisting Blob, Post, Mimic and Toad to oppose an oncoming foe that he fears he cannot face and win alone against.

X-Men – The Hunt for Professor X

Followed from the "Operation - Zero Tolerance" crossover, "The Hunt for Xavier" is a six part crossover take that ran in the two major X-Men titles. With writer Steve Seagle teaming up with artist Chris Bachalo (Captain America – Homeland, Dark Reign – The Sinister Spider-Man) in the issues of Uncanny X-Men. Joe Kelly (Emperor Joker, Justice League Elite) and Adam Kubert (Amazing Spider-Man – Renew Your Vows, Avengers & X-Men – Axis) also filled the story in the pages of the second volume of X-Men comic series by Marvel Comics in 1998.

Since this was a six-issue crossover arc, penciller Leinil Francis Yu (New Avengers, Secret Invasion) and Pasqual Ferry (Adam Strange – Planet Heist, Superman – Ending Battle) also appeared as guest artist. Late artist Mike Wieringo (Fantastic Four, The Flash) also contributed to the X-Men issue #1/2 that is also part of the book as well. The entire concept has build upon the idea of what if Professor Xavier's long-time trusty mutant-detecting program goes rogue and how will he manage to put an end to it's menace then.
