Secret Empire | Comics

Captain America turned out to be a true believer of Hydra ideals and siege control from within as he planned out!

Running S.H.I.E.L.D. these days, Captain America sends Captain Marvel leading Alpha Flight alongside Guardians of the Galaxy on space to hold a line of defense when a huge Chitauri Wave shows up. From Helicarrier bridge, Steve sends Ironheart and Iron Man to work up a Planetary Defense Shield that was taken down earlier by a Hydra bomber.

In the mean time, a group of super-villain attacks New York who was all former prisoners of Pleasant Hill and The Defenders were sent to take care of them. Hyperion and Quasar goes down while Nitro explodes in the middle of Manhattan. Announcing a state of emergency, Secretary of Defense made Steve Rogers command of national security.

The Shield suddenly goes back operational and cavalry arrive at New York as Avengers Unity Division, causing the villains flee. Before they could celebrate this victory, Commander Sharon Carter receives transmission of a collision with another Helicarrier and within moments they are under attack by Hydra goons under control of Doctor Faustus.

Cap then steps up telling everyone to hold their fire and the Hydra agents hail him as their Supreme Leader before taking Sharon into custody, who is baffled to learn that Steve was a traitor. Carol tries to communicate about opening a portal to Earth but Rogers made it clear that he want them occupied behind the shield with Chitauri waves.

Before being ambushed, Tony Stark A.I. eventually figured out the Chitauri invasion was a ploy to lure out the heavy hitters off Earth and the shield was never down. As Baron Zemo engulfs the island of Manhattan in a Darkforce dome using Blackout's powers, Iron Man sends out a distress call for heroes to assemble and Hydra takes over White House.

In a new world order established by the evil empire, Inhumans are being forced to register and all mutants moved to New Tian. From his internment, Rick Jones passes a data to reveal the truth about Hydra Cap through a young hacker named Rayshaun Lucas to Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Totally Awesome Hulk and Viv Vision of the Champions.

Resistance against the regime is formed by Ant-Man, Black Widow, Giant-Man, Hawkeye, Hercules, Quicksilver, Rescue, Stingray, Thing, Tigra and Wonder Man. Cap has been leading a Hydra' version of The Avengers with Black Ant, Deadpool, Odinson, Scarlet Witch, Superior Octopus, Taskmaster and Vision to ruthlessly deal with any threats.

Neither Rick, nor Sharon agrees to swear loyalty to Hydra and when Rick is sentenced to death by a firing squad to make a statement, he dies saying "Avengers Assemble". Meanwhile, Steve reunites with Madame Hydra to acquire the Cosmic Cube and rewrite history of World War II. They then raze the entire city of Las Vegas with their Helicarriers.

Upon analyzing info sent by Rick, Tony came to conclusion on how the sentient Cosmic Cube named Kobik has altered Cap while saving him during "Standoff" fiasco after she was befriended with Johann Shmidt AKA Red Skull. Steve became a perfect soldier to Hydra, who then overthrew Shmidt to complete his own plan to rule the world.

So, he tried for Winter Soldier to join Hydra and his refusal led Zemo to launch a drone plane with Bucky in it. Kobik was shattered into fragments that got scattered in places and finding all of the pieces is the only way to turn things around as they once were. Cap is also actively looking for the Cube to reshape reality as he see fit in Hydra's image.

Natasha Romanoff takes it upon herself to kill off the evil Cap and the Champions tagged along to her help. Ant-Man, Hercules, Mockingbird and Quicksilver volunteered to go and retrieve all the Cube fragments with Tony and Falcon agreed to help them cross the border. However, he ended up taking his old mantle of Captain America once again.

Things started escalating as they show up at the doorstep of Ultron, now wearing the skin of Henry Pym. In the mean time, Hydra Cap struck treaty with enlists The Punisher as his enforcer and brings back The Incredible Hulk back from dead. All of these led to a grand showdown when the X-Men showed up right before an unexpected revelation.

In 2017, Marvel Comics hired writer Nick Spencer (Ant-Man – Second-Chance Man, Doctor Strange – Damnation) and illustrator Daniel Acuna (Uncanny Avengers – Avenge The Earth, Uncanny Avengers – Counter-Evolutionary) to conceive the plot for "Secret Empire" crossover event, which is collected in a limited series that ran for eleven issues.

Then there were a group of artists David Marquez (Defenders – Diamonds Are Forever, Defenders – Kingpins of New York), Leinil Francis Yu (Operation – Zero Tolerance, X-Men – The Hunt for Xavier), Paco Medina (New X-Men – Mercury Falling, New X-Men – Nimrod) and Steve McNiven (Civil War, Death of Wolverine) to fill in for some extra.

Hydra Supreme Leader

Pages that are drawn by artist Andrea Sorrentino were the literal down point of the entire story as some of the characters were completely unrecognizable from their appearance. Artist Rod Reis on the other hand, did quite fine compared to the former.

Following the events of "Time Runs Out" and "Secret Wars", everything was restored and Steve Rogers came back to existence alongside many others. When trying to save his life after an attack from Crossbones, sentient Cosmic Cube Kobik actually created a new version of Captain America that was loyal to Hydra and the real one became a memory.

Turning Captain America into a fascist and altering reality to let Hydra assume control was a bold move by Marvel though, or maybe rather stupid one. Bringing Hank Pym/Ultron hybrid into the mix as well as the deceased Green Goliath was unnecessary. Turning Frank Castle into an agent of the uprising evil empire was also really uncalled for.

Captain America | Comics

Steve Rogers was a boy of Sarah and Joseph Rogers from Brooklyn, New York, who always wanted to join the army during the period of World War II, but failed repeatedly due to his fragile health. But he was then offered an alternative way to serve his country by scientist Abraham Erskine to become the volunteer test subject for a top secret project, Operation: Rebirth, focused to create soldiers who are physically far more superior to the others and will help win the war.

World War II
Rogers gladly accepted this golden opportunity to serve his country in the great war of the history and went through the process in which he took the "Super Soldier Serum" and the controlled bursts of "Vita Rays" to stabilize its effect on him. The process is successfully completed and his physique reached at the highest peak of a human construction. He is given the code-name "Captain America"; the first-ever super soldier of America. As the project became a success, Rogers received rigorous physical and tactical training, wearing a red, white and blue costume and his shield.

Then he was given the task of stopping the maniacal Nazi warmonger known as the Red Skull at any cost. Cap used to wield a "kite" shaped shield in the early days of his adventure and was later presented with his iconic disc-shaped shield by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Rogers was also given fake memory implants through mind-conditioning program in case he ever gets captured and he then remembered his name to be Grant Rogers as a result of the process.

The Invaders
As Captain America, Steve Rogers was aided by his young sidekick Bucky Barnes in the battlefield. Cap also fought alongside many super-powered Allied heroes like the original Human Torch, Namor the Sub-Mariner and formed a team that they dubbed as The Invaders. During his time on war, he met the Canadian adventurer Logan whom the world would later be known as the feral mutant Wolverine. Cap was also responsible for rescuing a very young Black Widow during war, with aid from a Russian soldier named Ivan Petrovitch and Logan.

Steve encountered many villains like Arnim Zola, Baron Zemo, Doctor Doom, Dormammu, HYDRA, Mister Sinister, Ringmaster and led countless missions with his team of Howling Commandos. After an accident during his time in the World War II, his partner "Bucky" was lost while the duo was trying to stop a drone-plane full of bombs, launched by Baron Zemo. Unfortunately, the plane exploded with Bucky still on board and Cap was also presumed dead for a long time, whereas he actually fell into icy Arctic waters before entering a state of suspended animation for many decades before he was found.

The Avengers
Cap was eventually resurfaced 70 years after the incident from the Arctic Circle after Namor has found him in still-frozen form and then is offered membership in the superhero team The Avengers by Iron Man. Captain America gladly accepted this honorable membership to the band of heroes and later became the leader of the team, leading the team for a long time to the road of victory against all odds thrown at them as a born leader. In the mean time, he starts adjusting himself to the modern time with help from Iron Man and his other fellow team members.

His former enemies from the World War II era such as Red Skull, Baron Zemo and Arnim Zola also resurfaced in the modern age and he fights them all again to make sure that they never succeed in their vile agenda of establishing the rule of HYDRA as well as many new adversaries as well. As the founding members of the team decided to take a break for a while, he was joined by three new recruits; Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Rogers would meet his wartime ally Nick Fury, who has become the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and would fall in love with Sharon Carter AKA Agent 13.

Nomad
Using the Cosmic Cube, Red Skull sends Sam Wilson to attack Rogers, who'd become The Falcon and will fight alongside Cap as a long-time friend. Then the government tried to cover up the death of a high-ranking corrupt government official, which disgusted Cap as it stands against everything he believes. Steve would give up his costume to assume the new alias of Nomad. Two other will wear the red and blue uniform only to be murdered by the Red Skull, forcing Cap to return to his old persona once again.

Masters of Evil
To counter the team of the heroic Avengers, Baron Zemo would assemble a group of villains with the mission to destroy them and going by the name Masters of Evil. Under Zemo's leadership, the bad-guys took down the heroes but later, Cap led the reformed Avengers towards victory against Zemo's minions. Soon, Cap gives up his old costume and shield to assume another identity of The Captain. He successfully fought alongside The Avengers on Kree-Skrull War, Operation Galactic Storm and Korvac Saga.

Onslaught Saga
When Charles Xavier of the X-Men turned into the powerful psionic entity Onslaught, Cap led The Avengers to fight the menace and after deciding the tactics to defeat the monster, they all sacrificed themselves in the end. However, they all were saved by young Franklin Richards, who transported all the perished heroes in a pocket dimension, where they all remain for a year (Heroes Reborn). Upon returning to Earth, he and his teammates battled sorceress Morgan Le Fay, Squadron Supreme and was even framed to be impostors.

Secret War
Aiding Nick Fury in his secret plan which no one other than him knew of, Cap assembled a team of Black Widow, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Spider-Man and Wolverine to Latveria that horribly backfired. Back then, Doctor Doom was trapped in Hell and Lucia von Bardas became the Prime Minister of Latveria, whom Fury suspected of financing a handful of super-criminals in U.S. The death and destruction caused by this covert operation was too great that it created a rift between Cap and Fury.

Avengers Disassembled
Years ago, Avenger member Scarlet Witch had a personal loss and that slowly starts to affect her psych, leading her to unintentionally cause a series of catastrophic events where Jack of Hearts blew up Ant-Man, Vision crush-landed a Quinjet on Avengers Mansion before unleashing an army of Ultron. These tragic incidents made She-Hulk go on a sudden berserker rage and tear the android and then charging at her teammates. Then an armada of Kree ship appears over them and Hawkeye sacrificed himself to save the day.

New Avengers
After the disbandment of the team, both Avengers and the X-Men were greatly affected by the alternate reality of "House of M". Then the super-villain Electro caused the massive "Breakout" at maximum security prison Raft when Captain America was already there. Aided by the heroes present to restrain the villains on the loose, Cap later formed the team of New Avengers with Iron Man, Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman and The Sentry. Wolverine was also recruited to the team after quite a debate among the other teammates because of his lethal ways towards any situation.

Winter Soldier
While looking for the Cosmic Cube with Nick Fury and Sharon Carter, Cap discovered that his long lost sidekick and war-buddy Bucky Barnes is actually alive and currently operating as an assassin known as Winter Soldier. Following an encounter with him, Sharon was convinced that it was actually Bucky but Rogers refused to believe until Fury supported the idea with strong evidence. They two face off but Bucky had no memory of the past. So, Roger used the Cube to restore his memory but Bucky then fled.

Civil War
After the Stamford Incident, S.H.I.E.L.D. tried to enact the Superhuman Registration Act and for opposing the idea, Captain America was declared a fugitive. He build a resistant group called Secret Avengers, even letting Punisher join the team. He and Iron Man opposed over their different ideology and many other heroes paid the price. The final battle took place in Times Square, where Steve pinned down Tony but soon realized that he is no longer serving the people, Cap stood down and ordered his followers to do so.

Death of Captain America
As he was taken into the custody, Cap is assassinated by Crossbones, whom Red Skull had set up. Mind controlled by Doctor Faustus, Sharon Carter shot him several more times. Rogers were given a state funeral, while his friends and colleagues mourn the loss of his life. Wolverine and Winter Soldier even embarked their personal mission to avenge his death and breached into the S.H.I.E.L.D. to interrogate Crossbones. Steve would eventually be revived and brought back but he let Bucky to carry the mantle of Captain America.

Rebirth
While the world saw Steve Rogers die, his soul was trapped in between space and time. His mind was relieving moments from World War II and him being Captain America over and over again. He asked Vision to record a message during "Kree-Skrull War" to send it to Mister Fantastic and Henry Pym to get him out of time. Reed Richards figured that Sharon Carter can bring him back but by then his body was in possession of Red Skull. His body was recovered and he left Barnes to carry the mantle of Captain America (Captain America – Reborn).

Siege
A lot has changed during Rogers' absence and Norman Osborn has become the head of national security agency H.A.M.M.E.R. Wanting to overthrow Osborn from his current position, he get back Tony Stark on his feet and then lead New Avengers, Secret Warriors and Young Avengers to stop the madman when he, along with his Dark Avengers have launched an assault on Asgard. After the fall of Osborn, Steve Rogers became the new head of security of the United States.

Fear Itself
In search of a divine ancient hammer, Red Skull's daughter Sin became Skadi and thus, set the Asgardian god of fear; The Serpent. Sin almost killed Bucky and forced Steve to return to action as Captain America but The Serpent broke Cap's shield during their confrontation. While everything else was in ruins as The Serpent's worthies were wrecking havoc and the heroes were barely keeping up against them, Cap picks up Mjolnir; proving himself to be worthy and joined the battle to victory.

Spider-Island
When one of Spider-Man's old nemeses Jackal returned with a new sinister scheme, he kidnapped Captain America to use him as "Spider-King", a means to spread the virus that will grant people spider-powers. To stop Spider-King from doing so, Venom captured him and replaced Cap with himself to infiltrate Jackal's lair. Cap and Venom fought side by side against Spider-Queen until other heroes joined the battle.

Avengers: X-Sanction
The time-travelling mutant Cable traveled from the future to save his daughter Hope Summers from a future where The Avengers are responsible for her death. So, he kidnaps Falcon knowing Cap will follow and managed to capture him despite Rogers being a better fighter. Iron Man and Red Hulk also fall prey to him until he was forced to give up as the Techno-Organic Virus in his body starts consuming him.

Avengers Vs. X-Men
After Sam Alexander, the latest recruit of the Nova Corps visited Earth to warn The Avengers about the coming of Phoenix Force, Captain America goes to Utopia to talk to Cyclops about handing over Hope Summers, who is believed to be the new host for Phoenix. Steve was blasted with an optic blast from Scott and a major battle between Avengers and the X-Men broke in. Hope flees from Utopia and Rogers sent Wolverine on her tail. The battle came to end at one point but by then both teams have endured immense toll on their soul.

Uncanny Avengers
In the aftermath of the fallout with Cyclops and the X-Men, Steve realized that he should've done more for the mutants and to unify the humans with them, he formed Avengers Unity Division. He recruited Havok, Rogue, Scarlet Witch, Thor and Wolverine to mount an attack against the Red Skull, who tried to steal the brain of deceased Professor X to spread his control over the world. Things get out of the hand from there and other heroes join to take down the menace Red Skull became as Red Onslaught (AXIS).

Castaway in Dimension Z
Steve and Sharon go to investigate a subway car hidden in the station and when only he is allowed to hop in. As he rides along, the car disappears with him into another realm after he was drugged. Rogers wakes up discovering himself as a captive of his old enemy Arnim Zola, who welcomes him to Dimension Z. He then sees a baby inside a huge tube, whom he rescues before jumping off the facility. The boy turns out to be Zola's son, whom Steve later raised as his own and named him "Ian".
