Spider-Man goes back to basics with rekindled love with Mary Jane, a new roommate and a dangerous new villain!

After his latest victory over Norman Osborn as the Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker is trying to get back at his feet and what better way to do that other than hanging out with Mary Jane Watson, the love of his life? However, he finds him awake at 5 AM at the sound of his roommate playing Call of Duty: Latveria with all those speakers on.

The person, Fred Myers is also a known super-villain Boomerang, other than being his roomie who just moved in alongside his friend Randy Robertson. Lately, he robbed a museum and former Kingpin turned current mayor of New York, Wilson Fisk allowed him to escape. This made Spidey suspicious but he can now keep an eye on Fred from home.

The next thing he knows is Avengers, Defenders and X-Men are trying to fend the city from an alien invasion. Spider-Man jumps right in to help fight this army of insectoids and he sees Human Torch falling victim to one of those. Soon, he sees all of the assembled heroes were having their face swallowed up by those creatures except him.

He noticed a pattern in the portal that the biomasses were coming from and to see if he is right, Spidey leaps towards it, only to hit by a glass bubble. He sees master of illusions, Mysterio standing on the other side and quickly bursts in to subdue him.

The judge gets bored with Mysterio monologuing at his hearing and then Janice Lincoln, daughter of mobster Tombstone and former Beetle of the imposter Sinister Six team shows up to defend his case but before doing that, she starts puking bugs. The entire courtroom is swarmed with hordes vermin and everything around them starts collapsing.

Amazing Spider-Man – Back to Basics | Comics

This looks a lot like those schemes Quentin Beck would put out and he seeks an exit while everyone else is seemingly being massacred but he instead finds himself surrounded in dark with an entity that has a history with him and sent Beck after the wall-crawler. Wrapped around in a huge centipede, this new foe heralds doom for the hero.

Peter thought he saw enough weirdness for then but didn't expect a sudden encounter with Fisk only a week ago. Even though very strict to all other vigilantes, Wilson seem to publicly accept him to separate him from his peers. Then he is accused of plagiarizing his doctoral degree and his entire academic credentials got literally trashed.

This fiasco has made him lose the job at Daily Bugle and in spite of him not being guilty; he couldn't come clean about it without revealing his secret identity and the time when Otto Octavius took control over his body. Though Mary Jane laughs it off for the ridiculousness of the whole thing but unfortunately, Aunt May didn't took it very well.

Tired of making the same mistakes again and again, Peter decides to turn his whole life around by going back to MJ and resume his relation with her. Things did started falling in line as Empire State University calls him in to give him a second chance to re-submit his doctoral thesis on recommendation of faculty member Dr. Curt Connors AKA The Lizard.

Though Parker is freaked out to see Connors in his reptilian persona, he assures that there is an inhibitor chip on his neck to make sure that he doesn't hurt anyone. He is also working on reverse engineering an Isotope Genome Accelerator to separate his two personalities. At that very moment, Black Ant and Taskmaster broke in to steal it.

Since he cannot stop them without blowing his cover, Peter causes a chemical explosion and Spider-Man arrives to rescue. Before leaving, he recognizes and greets Parker among the crowd. All of a sudden Peter and Spidey became two different persons moving ahead with their own lives, one with Mary Jane and other with crime-fighting.

So, when the Tri-Sentinel shows up next time wrecking the city MJ and Pete goes to a bowling alley, while everyone's friendly neighborhood wall-crawler goes to fight the murder-bot of mutants! One of them however become powerless, another one has thrown responsibility out of the window but how does Kraven the Hunter got mixed into this?

Amazing Spider-Man – Back to Basics

To shake things up from the core and getting a fresh new start, Marvel Comics hired a brand-new creative team of writer Nick Spencer (Ant-Man – Second-Chance Man, Doctor Strange – Damnation) and artist Ryan Ottley (Haunt, Invincible) in 2018 for "Back to Basics" storyline for the newest monthly ongoing volume of Amazing Spider-Man.

Collecting the first five issues of the series, Nick actually did a pretty impressive beginning as he laid foundation for upcoming arcs yet to come and Ryan was at his absolute peak as well. Going back to the roots, they bring back some of the old villains who, although are not Carnage or Goblin-level scary but troublesome enough, to get back at Spidey.

Peter Parker Vs. Spider-Man!

Aside from the regular folks in the life of the hero, Black Cat, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Gambit, Groot, Hawkeye, Human Torch, Iron Fist, Iron Man, Jean Grey, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Old Man Logan, Rocket Raccoon, Rogue, She-Hulk, Star-Lord, Thing, Thor and Vision made cameo appearance.

Overall, "Back to Basics" really went back to the deep roots of Amazing Spider-Man legacy and nitpicking details to deliver another "Brand New Day" for the hero. The inclusion of penciller Humberto Ramos (Champions – Change The World, Extraordinary X-Men – X-Haven) for a bonus back-up story was also a treat for long-time fans.

Domino – Killer Instinct | Comics

As a sharpshooting mercenary Domino always made her own luck but what happens when her powers finally betrays her?

After hanging out with Mercs for Money and then tangling up with X-Force for a while to chase Weapon H, Neena Thurman decides to be soldier of fortune once again. As Domino, she forms a new mercenary group called The Posse with fellow merc Rachel Leighton AKA Diamondback and Inez Temple AKA Outlaw to get back to her old business.

It's Neena's birthday and they took a job to look into the Rural Route D72, where loggers involved in timber piracy are going missing. Inez and Neena go there to face off a gang of Russians and it turns out to be a trap for them. The latter came under heavy fire but the former came to rescue her and deliver a "Fastball Special".

The bait who turned into a creature is a mutant named Adelbert Greywing that they apprehend and their third accomplice Diamondback (not to be confused with Willis Stryker) arrives. Neena decides to let Adelbert tag along with them, probably because of birthday blues but Rachel strongly suggests against her habit of picking up strays.

Back at her apartment, Neena is surprised to see her new besties threw her a party by calling in Agent X, Amadeus Cho, Deadpool, ex-boyfriend club consisting Cable, Colossus and Warpath, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, her friends Kitty Pryde, Pixie and Storm from X-Men, fellow merc Taskmaster and even got The Dazzler to sing at her party.

In the middle of the performance, she suddenly starts having grim flashbacks of her past and then Rachel presents her a pug as a gift, which she names Pip. Outside, Alex and Wade inform Rachel of a bounty on her head placed by Topaz. In her room, an elderly fellow with a walker comes in with his caregiver to wish on her birthday.

Domino – Killer Instinct | Comics

The nurse turns out to be the one called Topaz, whom DP was referring to and she viciously unloads her on Domino. While she desperately seeks help from her "Good Luck" power, her attacker thrashed her and then threw her out of the window. As she ran out of luck, Neena thinks of hitting the pavement and nothing to hold on to.

Topaz apparently turned off her mutant power but then her employer tells her to give Neena her juice back and suddenly Spider-Man comes swinging to save her. At the same time, those two are apprehended by Deadpool, Diamondback and Outlaw for breaking in. However, the elderly suddenly got younger and teleported out with his nurse.

Inez and Rachel go to fetch her while Wade stays back to make sure she is okay. Next morning, she meets Amadeus Cho to talk about a way to prevent anyone from switching her power off and sees that she still got it by taking out a group of thugs in park.

The Posse heads to stop a robbery on a riverboat as their next job with Cho hanging out with them. Though it was an inside job from her employer, she took care of the gig and then the freaky couple of her newfound enemies arrive once again. The elderly is much younger now due to her suffering restores years to his life.

While she thought they came here to kill her for that, they blew up the boat they came in to kill her friends and add more sufferings to her life. After being stranded between dream and memories for a while, she gives the attackers a chase. This time Topaz gets a beating before she could even react but still teleported out with her partner.

All of her friends are revealed to be alive because Diamondback sensed that their boat was rigged. Earlier Neena asked Cho for help and he suggests that she train her powers. To start with, he even recommends her taking a twelve hour flight to go to Hong Kong and meet Master of Kung Fu; Shang-Chi to hone her power under his tutelage.

Back home, Inez and Rachel calls in Wade Wilson to get more info on Topaz so they can take her out for their friend. Meanwhile, more flashbacks from her past on Project Armageddon come to haunt her as she readies her at Shang-Chi's dojo.

Domino – Killer Instinct

Marvel Comics brings back their soldier of fortune, Domino back in a new monthly series in 2018 as writer Gail Simone (Conan/Red Sonja, Wonder Woman/Conan) handling the plot, artist David Baldeon (Nova – Homecoming, Nova – Nova Corpse) providing illustrations and Greg Land (Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men) providing cover arts.

Collecting issues #01-06 from the ongoing series, the first storyline titled "Killer Instinct" puts Neena Thurman into the spotlight once again and though a solo ongoing, she is partnered up with mercs Diamondback and Outlaw for her latest rodeo. The new series mainly kick started in celebration for the release of Deadpool 2 movie.

Chaos and Romance

A brand-new mutant villain named Topaz and her partner Prototype are introduced into her life, which are linked to a past she constantly runs away from. An encounter with the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu explored new direction for her power that makes her even more badass than she already is and she uses it to the fullest.

"Killer Instinct" has a slew of cameo to guest appearances of known Marvel characters from Cable to Totally Awesome Hulk. Even the Merc with a Mouth showed up to participate in this one riding on a red scooter gag like a scene from the movie.

Astonishing X-Men – Life of X | Comics

When world's most powerful telepaths are attacked by an unforeseen enemy, the X-Men enter astral plane to confront it.

Mutants around the world with psychic abilities are suddenly being attacked and they starts dying but just because most of them secluded themselves from the rest, these deaths gone unnoticed at the very beginning.

When it attacked Betsy Braddock AKA Psylocke when she was in London, she sent out a distress psychic call to fellow mutants that reached out to Angel, Bishop, Gambit, Fantomex, Old Man Logan and Rogue who were coincidentally in close range for various different reasons of their own. Betsy's psychic manifestation took shape of a giant butterfly over The Shard building.

Soon, Logan and Rogue arrives in Blackbird with the latter decides to fly to Betsy for aiding her. As she reaches near, Psylocke's psychic blades starts attacking as a defense mechanism and when they came back around, Angel comes following to save Rogue by shielding her with his wings.

Logan tries to divert rest of the blades towards him from Gambit, Fantomex and the crowd of London. When Bishop arrives too, Rogue asks him to get rid of the energy she's about to absorb from Psylocke which has infected her. With some effort, they managed to do that and apparently saved the day for that moment.

Astonishing X-Men – Life of X | Comics

Original X-Men member Beast also arrives on the spot to everyone's surprise as he has received the distress psychic call too. Psylocke reveals that the powerful mutant Amahl Farouk is back as the Shadow King once again and he want all of them, so that he can crawl back to real-world and infect it's populace with his poison.

She suggests that they travel to the Astral Plane to fight Shadow King and make sure that he never steps into our world. Otherwise, he will strike at psychics like Emma Frost, Jean Grey, Quentin Quire and Stepford Cuckoos next to make them his mind-slaves.

Logan voluntarily agrees to go inside since he already spent many years in his own timeline to fight the menacing Shadow King. The rest of them followed him as Angel stays behind to aid Betsy just in case and to make sure his Archangel persona stays in check.

Bishop wanted to better the odds if one of their friends wakes up as Farouk's pawn by staying with Betsy and Warren. Just as they entered the Astral Plane, Shadow King senses their presence almost immediately and prepares himself as well as a special prisoner of his for a game with the lives of these X-Men.

Inside, they discover themselves as audience in a theater for a play about their lives but Logan realizes that something weird is going on and he ended up killing a zombie-version of Jean Grey, which triggered other characters present to attack the X-Men.

During their fight, Logan deduces that Hank McCoy among them is actually one of their old enemies, the mutant shape-shifter Mystique just by observing her movements. They all willingly enter three psychic doors presented to them when they realized that someone aside from Farouk is on Astral Plane is secretly helping them.

Astonishing X-Men – Life of X

The fourth monthly ongoing volume of Astonishing X-Men is launched and it begins with the six-part long "Life of X" storyline from Marvel Comics in 2018, which collected issues #01-06 of the series.

To pen out this one, comic-book writer Charles Soule (Civil War II, Death of Wolverine) was hired and he received assistance from artists Carlos Pacheco (Fantastic Four, Inhumans), Ed McGuinness (Deadpool, Guardians of The Galaxy), Jim Cheung (Avengers – The Children's Crusade, New Avengers – Illuminati), Mike Del Mundo (Elektra – Bloodlines, Elektra – Reverence) and Mike Deodato Jr. (New Avengers, Secret Avengers), who helped with cover art and illustrations.

Web of Shadow King

"Life of X" reassembles many of the former X-Men members as well as outcasts like Fantomex and Mystique, both of whom either worked with the team or any of the team members previously on occasion.

Plus, this one brings one of the oldest villains Shadow King that these mutant superheroes have faced many times on their earlier days and a long-deceased character back again. Even though the ending of the story is portrayed like a conclusion, for some weird reasons, it still feels like a mild cliffhanger though.

X-Men Gold – Evil Empires | Comics

Secret Empire of Hydra takes over the world and all the X-Men in Xavier Institute goes under lockdown.

In Central Park, a badly scarred Piotr Rasputin is sitting next to Kitty Pryde while the rest of the X-Men were playing baseball. They were talking about his recent injuries sustained during their fight over Manhattan against Alpha Sentinel. It was so severe that it made him turn back to his human form and now he cannot turn to steel anymore.

Rachel Grey kisses Kurt Wagner to return his feelings for her, which she felt when she was unconscious at Infirmary after taking out a Nanoswarm. Anole came in rushing to tell that something strange is happening outside. Doctor Strange appears on hologram to inform them of a Darkforce Dimension dome covering the city.

An assassin is hunting down mutants with a deep personal vendetta, going by the name "X-Cutioner". Inside X-Mansion, one of the new students named Belén was found dead by a gunshot on her head and a cross on her face. Kitty deduces that this is anti-mutant serial killer that Logan and Ororo have been investigating for some time.

After killing another boy named Oscar, the killer picks up Eye Boy and as he was about to get the drop on him, Shadowcat kicks him in the face. Prestige tries to take him out while Piotr moves Trevor away. He quickly came back to help them take down the assailant only to get shot in the face, which Rachel deflects back to him.

X-Men Gold – Evil Empires | Comics

Dust and Rockslide discovers huge amount explosives in Danger Room while looking for X-Cutioner earlier. As Kitty is informed she phase Piotr and Rachel through down with her to defuse the bombs but realizes that she can't. The mansion is quickly evacuated and Kitty goes back to the killer to find a disarming trigger.

Old Man Logan and Storm goes out seeking people in need of help and the former jumps into an alleyway to save an old woman from a demon. After he gutted it down, another one came out from the shadows and seriously injured him before meeting his fate. Nightcrawler faces an angry mob that chases him because of his appearance.

Shadowcat confronts X-Cutioner once again upon saving Pixie from his clutches but gotten depowered by a remote trigger he holds. Turns out, he has a personal vendetta against mutants for losing his family and pulls the trigger but Pete took the bullet before Santo Vaccarro knocks him out cold in time to save their home from blowing up.

Afterwards, Kitty and Pete heads for Washington, D.C. to meet the Congress about Mutant Deportation Act, where Anton Vanko AKA Whiplash made a break for it. He is taken down and despite their role in saving lives, the act progress further.

In Russia, Viktor Komolov of the Solntsevskaya Bratva collects the remains of Arkady Rossovich from The Hand in an attempt to resurrect the Soviet super soldier, Omega Red. Through black magic ritual, he even managed to revive Red but his body was still decaying and he needed to constantly feed on people's life energy to live.

The X-Men are tipped off about Omega Red's rebirth and they all fly to Russia for the Red Death to come at him. They realized that they have been lured there so that Komolov can use Magik' power to keep him alive forever. Colossus regained his armored form just in time and Logan gets a rematch with Arkady after quite a long time.

X-Men Gold – Evil Empires

X-Men Gold second monthly series follows its second arc in "Evil Empires" that collects issues #07-12 from Marvel Comics by writer Marc Guggenheim (Civil War – Wolverine, Extraordinary X-Men – IvX) with aid from artist Ken Lashley (Black Panther – Deadliest of the Species, X-Men Gold – Back To The Basics), Lan Medina and Luke Ross.

Aside from being a storyline of its own, "Evil Empires" served as one of the many tie-in stories to "Secret Empire" crossover event. Also, Colossus and Shadowcat bonds together once again in between these adventures, which would eventually come to a conclusion in "Til Death Do Us Part" story after a generation long period.

Omega Red Seeks Magik

One of the survivors of a Magneto attack in past, who lost his wife and kid to the madness of the megalomaniac becomes a problem for them. The final issue shed lights on the backstory of another newly introduced villain named Kologoth Antares and how he came to join the newly reformed Brotherhood of Evil Mutants by Mesmero.

Another old villain who used to antagonize Wolverine in general; Omega Red is back again but he tussled with a different version of Logan. The Gold team along with the Blue team of X-Men will join forces to fight back an enemy from past; Mojo from pocket dimension Mojoworld in upcoming "Mojo Worldwide" arc next.

X-Men Gold – Back To The Basics | Comics

Long before Professor Xavier started training his mutant students, X-Men were always feared by humans unlike other heroes from teams like The Avengers or Fantastic Four. With their recent war with The Inhumans, that phobia has returned again to cause mass hysteria.

Forming a new team with Colossus, Nightcrawler, Old Man Logan, Rachel Grey as Prestige and Storm, Kitty Pryde leads X-Men as their current leader to stop an attack from Terrax the Tamer. Rachel was hoping for an Avenger or Champion member to show up but Logan asks for their leader's instruction.

It took all of their effort just to defeat Terrax and considerable amount of property damage. Upon defeating him with some solid team-work, Kitty talks to civilians present at scene about earning their trust back again and develop a positive image for their race but no one is ready to listen to them.

Back at home, On top of that, they received an invoice from New York's City Register for a lease on Central Park, where Xavier Institute is currently situated. Ororo and Kurt argue about whether situation has improved for them or not, while Rachel practices in Danger Room alongside Armor and Rockslide.

X-Men Gold – Back To The Basics | Comics

Piotr was asking Katya if she is up for having dinner together but she points out how noting is as simple as that between them. Their little talk is suddenly interrupted when the new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants attacks the city and they had to run.

At United Nations building, X-Men confronts newest Brotherhood members Avalanche, Cleevus, Magma, Masque and Pyro. Logan is badly burnt by former ally Magma, as they tried to talk her out and then quickly taken away by Kurt to safety, where they both stumbled onto one of their old enemies; mutant hypnotist Mesmero.

He sends Kurt away using his regained power and took Logan to his secret hideout. Rest of the team was defeated by remaining X-Men members but all Brotherhood members fled to avoid arrest. Director Lydia Nance of Heritage Initiative was already commenting about a Human/Mutant race war on public media and then mayor of New York gets kidnapped by the Brotherhood.

There is a large hidden agenda at play that X-Men later discovers and takes care of. Meanwhile, a mercenary is hunting down mutants in New York City with a deeply-rooted personal vendetta. Elsewhere, mutant thief and occasional X-Men member Gambit took a job to steal a secret nanotech from a secret lab for an anonymous buyer.

Upon learning Olivia Trask has hired him and it was a swarm of self-replicating nanites, he chooses not to deliver. Which eventually caused a stir among two parties and accidentally the nanites became a self-aware Sentinel by merging itself with nearby available computer systems. It quickly overpowers Gambit, then upgraded itself by evolving and engaged all other heroes to create a city-wide havoc.

For many who do not know, a controversial move by Indonesian artist Ardian Syaf to include hidden political and religious messages in first issue led Marvel to fire him in disciplinary action.

Extraordinary X-Men – X-Haven | Comics

Storm assembled an all-new, extraordinary team of X-Men where she wants Old Man Logan and young Jean Grey to join.

When Thanos came to Earth last time, he came looking for his illegitimate son and had a clash with Black Bolt, the King of Inhumans. The latter detonated a Terrigen Bomb that not only destroyed New Attilan but also left Terrigen Mist in the atmosphere. However, it drastically increased their number while also severely affecting the lives of mutants.

Following this event, X-Men leader Cyclops have gone totally nuts and tried to start a mutant "Revolution" for dominance with a few of his radical followers who had the same belief. This irrational act eventually went horribly wrong for everyone and years of working to improve their public image by Professor X is completely ruined within moments.

Now, veteran X-Men member Storm finds herself with a burden on her shoulder to save her own race without the guidance of her mentor and former leader, Professor Charles Xavier. With the worldwide spread of Terrigenesis, humans and mutants are both dying from its exposure that causes what they are calling “M-Pox” or "X-Pox" these days.

As a result, the age old fear of mutants among humans has re-emerged once again. Meanwhile, a time-displaced Jean Grey from Earth-TRN240 was trying to find a plain and simple life on Earth-616 reality, gets approached by Storm to join their team, which she declined given her history of ending up dying every time as Marvel Girl no matter what.

Extraordinary X-Men – X-Haven | Comics

When Icaman tries to talk to Jean to change her mind and failed, Ororo offered her to take a look into her head using the latter's psychic powers. She realizes that the outbreak of M-Pox caused by Terrigen Mist is not only killing their kind but also sterilizing them from ever to grow in numbers again and it can mean the end of the mutant race.

Mutant sorceress Illyana Rasputin aka Magik took it upon herself to scout throughout the whole world seeking for any mutant refugees in dire situation to save them from angry human mobs triggered by current mutant hysteria and brings them all back to X-Haven, the current headquarters of X-Men situated in magical dimension of Limbo.

Illyana goes to New Delhi, India, to save a family and their young mutant girl affected by Terrigen Mist from a tough crowd. She eventually rescued the family before taking a hit and brought them back to Jean Grey School For Higher Learning for safety.

Magik then heads straight to Lake Baikal, Russia, looking for her elder brother and former X-Man member Colossus to recruit him back to their fold during this crisis while their old pal Nightcrawler was being chased by a newly reformed group of Marauders.

Storm and Iceman were astounded to discover Old Man Logan is walking among them when he mistakenly attacked Cerebra, recently restructured within a Sentinel body by thinking it as an enemy. The old friends catch up quick about their current state of affairs before the young Jean finally meets with Logan to convince and bring him back to action.

Colossus and Magik investigate the disappearance of Nightcrawler only to run into the new team of Marauders and then attacked by someone Sinister. As soon as Illyana Rasputin fell, the magical defenses that she placed to defend X-Haven from Demons of Limbo attacking the sanctuary, collapses and the X-Men got a huge mess on their hand to clean.

Extraordinary X-Men – X-Haven

The trail of mega crossovers and Universe shattering events like "Schism", Avengers Vs. X-Men and Infinity led to current status-quo of mutantkind in Marvel Universe. The death of Cyclops in Battleworld fighting God Emperor Doom during Secret Wars made it worse as the team is now scattered and disoriented without a leader to follow.

Comic-book writer Jeff Lemire (Thanos – Thanos Returns, Thanos – The God Quarry) and artist Humberto Ramos (Age of Apocalypse, Amazing Spider-Man) has teamed up to draw a new line for the beginning of a brand-new starting point with the story “X-Haven”, collecting issue #01-05 from the newly launched ongoing series.

A Sinister Nightmare Returns

As a part of the "All-New, All-Different Marvel" event, the new Extraordinary X-Men monthly series offers a fresh spot for new readers while also hinting back to the past events that leads to current affairs. One of the finest aspects of the plot was bringing together an alternate-reality Jean Grey with a time-displaced Logan for a new team.

Then there was trouble in Limbo that needed to taken care of, a new group of Marauders abducting X-Men members, severed tail of Nightcrawler, strange apparition of Professor X and someone from the shadows plans something sinister about their future. The series serves the next arc as a tie-in with "Apocalypse Wars" crossover event.
