A great selective collection of writer/artist Mike Mignola (Abe Sapien, Cosmic Odyssey)'s early days of work on Hellboy franchise from Dark Horse Comics, all comprised on "The Chained Coffin and Others" trade paperback, years after the original publication. Although, Hellboy is often seen working with his partner Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman or other B.P.R.D. agents, these collection of tales were mostly based on his solo adventures, except "The Wolves of Saint August" and "Almost Colossus".

"The Chained Coffin" is one of Hellboy's solo missions, outlined by Abraham Sapien from a letter that the former wrote to him. Some of the stories were featured on the pages of Dark Horse Presents monthly ongoing series and these standalone mini-tales of eight pages, merged with two issue limited series "Almost Colossus", that is preceded by previous storylines "Seed of Destruction" and "Wake the Devil". Mike Mignola eventually won Eisner Award on "Best Writer/Artist: Drama" category in 1998 for his out-standing work on "Almost Colossus" mini-series.
