World War Hulk | Comics

Hulk was banished to space by The Illuminati to save the people of Earth from his rampage but he drifted to a harsh planet named Sakaar and become the ruler of Sakaar with Caiera as his queen, after defeating the notorious tyrant Red King of that planet. However, their joy on Sakaar was short lived when the people on Sakaar and the pregnant Caiera died in a powerful explosion of warp-core from the shuttle that brought Hulk on Sakaar.

Without even verifying who caused the accident, Hulk madly blames The Illuminati for this incident and travels back to Earth for vengeance with The Warbound at his side. On moon, Hulk battles and savagely beats down The Inhuman king Black Bolt and even his Quasi-Sonic powers were only good enough to knock the Hulk back for a while. Then he returned to Earth with Black Bolt's unconscious body, announcing New York City to be immediately evacuated.

He then smashed his way into the X-Mansion to find Xavier, instead had a fight with the X-Men and the New X-Men. Dust, Elixir, Hellion, Mercury, Prodigy, Rockslide, Surge and X-23 of the New X-Men led the first wave of attack against the green rage monster but among them, only X-23 managed to hurt him bad. Then Beast, Colossus, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Lockheed, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Wolverine led the second wave. All of them are either knocked out or crippled by Hulk one by one.

The X-Factor team and Excalibur were also alerted about the situation, the unstoppable Juggernaut decides to butt-in but got a beat-down himself too. Darwin, Hepzibah, Multiple Man, Monet St. Croix, Siryn, Strong Guy, Warpath and Wolfsbane took another dig at the monster and helped the X-Men stand to their feet. After Cessily Kincaid showed him the graves of all the fallen mutants of their ranks during M-Day, Hulk leaves after learning their loss.

Failed to convince The Sentry to aid them stopping HulkIron Man in his improved "Hulk-Buster" armor and their collision have destroyed the Stark Tower in the process. The sorcerer supreme Doctor Strange confronted him to stop his rampage by trying to reach out to Bruce Banner, but he easily defeats him seeing past his illusions, breaking Strange's hands doing so. Hulk then turned Madison Square Garden in a huge gladiator arena and forced them to fight each other in front of a large crowd.

With the city severely broken and evacuated, many attempts by several other superheroes failed to stop Hulk and his Warbound including Doc Samson, Ghost Rider, She-Hulk, the team of New Avengers, Excalibur, Heroes For Hire, The Initiative and Fantastic Four. Then finally, when all heroes fell before the might of the green goliath, the all powerful Golden Guardian of Good made up his mind to enter the scene; to play God.

After years of his destructive rampage and a recent incident in Las Vegas that killed several civilians, Hulk is proven too dangerous to stay on Earth. So, the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards, Doctor Strange, Iron Man and the Inhuman king Black Bolt; members of a secret band of super powered figures called The Illuminati decides to send him off-planet. Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. approached Bruce Banner to go on a mission to the orbit of Earth to destroy a satellite weapon of S.H.I.E.L.D. that went rogue.

Though he was meant to send in a distant planet free of any inhabitant but the shuttle carrying Hulk entered in a wormhole and he finally crushed onto the savage planet of Sakaar. As he had a long space travel, the Hulk was in a very weakened condition that allowed him to be captured soon with the help of obedience disk placed on him by his captors. He is then forced to battle as a gladiator to entertain the ruler of that alien planet, the notorious Red King.

In the gladiatorial arena of Sakaar, various challenges were thrown at him but Hulk successfully smashed them all and remained victorious. A few survivors of the arena has banded together with Hulk to tackle the onslaught that was coming their way. He was about to receive a pardon from the Red King but instead an angered Hulk attacked him out of his hatred for him and sent to The Maw along with other captives as punishment.

He forms a team called Warbound with fellow gladiators Brood, Elloe, Hiroim the Shamed, Korg and Miek to face the Red King's second in command Caiera the Oldstrong, who was proven quite a match for Hulk's own strength. She even tries to buy him off on Red King's behalf but Hulk rejected the offer. The next day, Hulk took out a Deathfire Bomb dropped in the arena and then took out an entire troops of Imperial Death's Head alone, making him even dangerous threat in the eye of the King.

Later, Caiera decided to send one of the captive being with cosmic powers at Hulk and he faced a mind-controlled Silver Surfer in the intergalactic battle arena, with whom the jolly green giant had a savage fight that eventually freed the Surfer of his disks. He then frees every other person in the arena wearing an obedience disk. Bidding Surfer good-bye, Hulk and his Warbound went into the woods and even managed to receive support of the local villagers.

The Warbound takes care of the dreaded Wildebots, fend off the army of the Emperor and free the maw of its prisoners. The Emperor goes mad seeing the fall of his authority slowly to the rise of Hulk whom everyone now calls the fabled Sakaarson and this, along with a few other facts made Caiera a bit doubtful to her King. In order to survive against the odds on Sakaar and find his freedom, Hulk must find a way to defeat the Red King.

Before he goes looking for Banner, Logan picks up Bruce’s scent from his cousin Dr. Jennifer Walters. After an awful lot of tracking Logan finally encounters Bruce in a harem like temple in a little village of Tibet surrounding by many women and after a triggering conversation, they both engage in a fierce battle. But as they both gets into a bloody rage, the Hulk manages to tear Wolverine in half and threw his legs four miles away.

When Banner went nuts after his wife Betty Ross broke up with him for Freddy Prinze Jr, Hulk made a mess of New York and The Ultimates tried to stop him. He was nuked but survived somehow by turning into Hulk. When he turned into Bruce again, he tried to hide himself from public but trouble finds him always on the wrong side of his temper which is followed by the series of global incidents.

Meanwhile, Betty Ross tries to convince Tony Stark and Steve Rogers to stop Logan from killing Bruce, but her attempts were quite unsuccessful. Aside from that, when Hulk tore up Wolverine into two, he was asking him about which leg he should eat first and suddenly out of nowhere, Betty Ross drops out of a S.H.I.E.L.D. stealth hyperjet as Plan B.

With the writer/artist team of Damon Lindelof and Leinil Francis Yu (New Avengers, Secret Invasion), the long delayed six issue miniseries of "Ultimate Wolverine Vs. Hulk" was started publishing by Marvel Comics in 2005 and finished on 2009. As the Hulk Vs. Wolverine battles are always one of comic-books' most epic fights, this one is no different either. Reference of this fight was later mentioned on the pages of Ultimate X-Men, Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum.

However, aside from the superhero brawl, there is a big and a bit of confusing plot in the background that doesn’t serve the story very well. This entire story took place in an alternate reality of Marvel Comics, Earth 1610, which is also known as the Ultimate Universe.

When he reaches to the shore, Hulk turns into Banner and is rescued by two stranger Ripley and Green. They all ran for their life after having been chased by a monster out of nowhere. Just about when they thought they are safe after moving to a corner, the Gray Hulk appears and threatened to smash them all. Upon standing on his feet, Dr. Bruce Banner quickly turns into the Hulk again to fight back and engages with his old incarnation.

Many punches are exchanged between these gamma-powered goliath till one fell. When Gray Hulk is subdued by the green Hulk, it turned out to be an imposter posed by a Mindless One. As this takes place, someone from a place unknown is keenly watching over the fight. While Hulk was trying to figure out what is going on, the legendary Fin Fang Foom enters the scene. As he tried to obliterate the Hulk after he refused to kneel before the Dragon Lord, Hulk taught him a good lesson he would remember for some time.

Ripley and Gwen are then approached by General “Thunderbolt” Ross on the other side of the jungle who led them to a secret military base called Project Smash in this mysterious Monster Island. Meanwhile, in a flashback sequence, a younger Bruce Banner is seen to have trouble in his school life and he is talking to his imaginary friend Hulk, who suggests him to smash all the puny humans. He gets beat up for standing up for a girl, his school taechers are worried for him and his abusive father tries to reach out to him.

General Ross was taking Ripley and Gwen to the facility but then gets attacked by a ferocious two-headed dog. As the situation was not crazy enough, the feral X-Man with a nasty temper shows up to slice and dice things up and so does a certain Conqueror. Or maybe someone else is responsible for the whole show.

This storyline has resolved the year long mysteries Bruce Banner were having all along with him and has a wide array of guest appearance like the villainous Kang the Conqueror, Banner’s old pal Doc Samson and Wolverine. This story might raise the question in your mind at times that either Doctor Banner or the writer himself is losing grasp on the reality around him.
