Hulk – Gray | Comics

Physicist Bruce Banner pays a visit to world's renowned psychologist and long time friend Leonard Samson, who is also a gamma powered superhero of his own rights. For years, Doc Samson has been the most supportive friend that Banner ever had and despite their differences; they always watched each other’s back in every awry situation.

And mostly, he is one of the few people Banner knows who could actually understand the Banner/Hulk dilemma. As he stopped by at Samson’s place, he re-collects the old memories of that time when his life was turned upside down after the accident that caught him in the middle of the experimental explosion of the Gamma Bomb while trying to save the teenager Rick Jones, who had no idea of the experiment.

Initially, his superiors and all the military personnel thought him to be dead for credible reasons yet he miraculously survived the nuclear holocaust. But after a couple of hours he transformed into the incredible monster that always lived in the deepest corner of his psyche and instead of being green he was gray at first.

He went on a wild rampage and tried to seek redemption to his love of life Betty Ross, the daughter of General "Thunderbolt" Ross, which did not went very well since the army was already in search of him and General Ross believed him to be a huge threat. After having a brief skirmish with the armed forces, Hulk faces an Avenger member simply known as the Golden Avenger; Iron Man.

Banner managed to befriend Sheriff Jonas Tolliver of Faulkner, who invited Bruce to stay at his place for the night. The next day, Banner suddenly fell in sick and turned into Hulk again before tearing everything apart around him. The green giant decimated the nearby farms, barns and every other establishment like a raging storm and people could do nothing to stop his rampage. When his path of destruction crossed with Sheriff Tolliver himself, he pointed his gun at the monster although knowing it would do nothing.

Surprisingly, Hulk somehow managed to pull his punches and turned into Banner again before being taken into police custody. Upon putting Banner behind bars, Sheriff Tolliver calls the Mayor and updates about the situation so that he can call in The Avengers to take Hulk in. As Iron Man was assembling Scarlet Witch, Vision and Wonder Man to take Banner in, reports of a commercial airliner being destroyed by the Hulk hits TV.

As he frequently turns into the Hulk and goes on rampage, he meets the Man-Thing, who reaches to the swamp and is abducted by Owen Candler. A small group of Avengers consisting Iron Man, Vision, Wonder Man and Scarlet Witch arrives in time to save Banner from Candler and his evil plan but Banner turns into the Hulk again and engages in a battle with these mighty members of The Avengers and that's not the end of all.

Hulk eventually meets his long time rival and one of the only few people who can actually take him down; the feral X-Man called Wolverine and they both did a number on each other after a long time. When they are both exhausted and done for, The Thing of the Fantastic Four awaits for his fair share of clobberin' time with the Jade Giant. All these time, the Hulk’s actions were being secretly controlled by the villainous Tyrannus.

Hulk by John Byrne & Ron Garney

Legendary comic-book talent John Byrne (Alpha Flight, Uncanny X-Men) envisions the Hulk like no other and when artist Ron Garney (Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America) aids him with his extraordinary drawing skills in doing that, a great saga is to be created. This two industry giant worked together for Marvel Comics back in 1999 with the re-launch of the new ongoing series featuring the green goliath after the first volume previously ended following its 474 issue run.

Trail of Mindless Destruction

Byrne and Garney pitched the long story without a big core plot with only the green giant meeting many heroes and villains and fights his way out as well as with his own demons. Although, the story pits the Hulk in the way of many important characters of Marvel Universe, having fight against them too at some point but overall, the entire arc serves as a personal journey for both Banner and Hulk.

Onslaught Saga | Comics

Professor Charles Xavier and his team of X-Men have previously faced Magneto in his space station Avalon to stop his reign of terror (Fatal Attraction) and during the battle against the master of magnetism and his Acolytes, Magneto extracted the Adamantium from Wolverine's body after being stabbed by him, which left the latter in a withered and dying state. Seeing this, an enraged Xavier immediately attacks Magneto and wiped out his mind, left him in a catatonic state.

Unknowingly, Charles also absorbed the dark essence of Magneto's mind while attacking him, which subconsciously merged with Xavier's consciousness and creates a very powerful psionic entity called Onslaught. Xavier's decades of frustration over the events with mutants made Onslaught take an attempt to forcibly establish his year-old dream of mutant/human peaceful co-existence.

At first, Onslaught wanted to establish Xavier's dreams through the means that Magneto used. However, he later decided to destroy all humans too anyway. He approached X-Men's former nemesis, Juggernaut but upon denial, he tore out the crimson Gem of Cyttorak from Cain Marko and left him beaten. Then Jean Grey was approached by the being to join his cause but she refused the offer too.

Onslaught also tried to recruit Xavier's X-Men to fight against humans but upon denial, he attacked them all and both parties engaged in a fight. It was when Wolverine noted that he looked more like Magneto after Onslaught pretends to be Xavier himself, the monster loose his cool and attacked the team. Onslaught now reveals his true form to the X-Men and claims that he and Xavier are one.

During their fight, Bishop absorbs a huge blast of psionic energy thrown at the X-Men from Onslaught to save his friends, while Cannonball, Cyclops, Gambit, Iceman, Phoenix, Storm and Wolverine continues the fight. Onslaught then abducts the powerful mutant child Franklin Richards of Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman by posing as a little boy named Charles. Cable's time-displaced brother Nate Grey AKA X-Man was also taken down to have more psionic power from him for himself.

Amidst this chaos, Ozymandias awakens his master Apocalypse who joins Uatu the Watcher in witnessing the end of the "Age of Wonders". The team of Fantastic Four, Avengers, an enraged Hulk and even the villainous Doctor Doom came forward to oppose Onslaught's threat to existence. Together, The Avengers and X-Men formed an alliance against the greatest threat which the world has ever seen but probably all of them will not be able to see the end of it.

"Onslaught Saga" is a major comic-book crossover event that took place in 1996, published by Marvel Comics and this event was centered on a psionic being of pure evil of the same name. The character, Onslaught was co-created by writer Scott Lobdell (Alpha Flight, Generation X) and Mark Waid (Captain America – Sentinel of Liberty, Deadpool – Sins of the Past), along with artist Andy Kubert (Damian – Son of Batman, Dark Knight III – The Master Race).

To Survive an Onslaught

Various other writers and artists have contributed in this historical Marvel event. Among them, Mark Waid's plot was something that actually stayed faithful to the core event that nearly shattered the entire Marvel universe. The drawings of Andy Kubert in the second ongoing volume of X-Men and Joe Madureira (Avenging Spider-Man – My Friends Can Beat Up Your Friends, Deadpool – The Circle Chase)'s work in Uncanny X-Men are most magnificent.

Evidence of Absorbing Man, Ant-Man, Black Knight, Captain America, Cyclops, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, Doctor Octopus, Iron Man, Magneto, Nova, Thor and Wolverine being perished in this timeline were shown too. Also the plot has given birth to a potential villain who would become a great threat for the Hulk as well as other superheroes of Marvel. There is a follow-up one-shot story titled "Hulk – The End" that came out years later.

Infinity Gauntlet | Comics

After the Death worshiping mad titan Thanos was resurrected by Death herself, he managed to collect all six of the powerful Infinity Gems from the Elders of the Universe. Taking the gems in his possession, Thanos crafted the Infinity Gauntlet, holding all the gems in his left glove and claiming godhood once again. As he has gained the virtual omnipotence, he decides to please his love Death and even after he creates a shrine in her honor for both of them, she still refuses to be charmed.

Witnessing the "Rebirth of Thanos", Silver Surfer; the mighty herald of Galactus, quickly rushes to seek aid of his old friend Doctor Strange in stopping Thanos from erasing the entire plane of existence. Now, this act of desperation in an overwhelming urge of receiving affection from Death certainly has its devastating effects and it was felt by Captain America, The Eternals, Hulk, the Kree Empire, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Spider-Man, who has sensed something big is happening. The Avengers were wondering about the situation as they get busy with the cleanup of this mess, when Adam Warlock came to visit Doctor Strange to inform about the impending threat upon the entire universe.

Sensing some abnormalities, Doctor Doom comes crashing at Sanctum Sanctorum to confront Stephen Strange and the Surfer, when Warlock explains everything to him. He then starts recruiting Quasar, Doctor Doom and other heroes to stop Thanos. Even Odin assembles the deities of Asgard upon having a meeting with Council of Godheads to face the problem before it's too late but got trapped because of their exit being destroyed by a shock-wave that The Mad Titan released a while ago.

The unity of heroes also gains support from most powerful entities in the universe, including Galactus. Hulk and Wolverine are tasked by Warlock to kill Thanos the moment they get the chance. Then using a magic spell and the Eye of Agamatto, Doctor Strange transports all the gathering of heroes to space for confronting Thanos in a last ditch attempt to save reality itself. With Mephisto at his side as an adviser, Thanos will stop at nothing to bring upon the end of the Universe.
