The Walking Dead – Life Among Them
 | Comics
Rick Grimes and the survivors hit the road after giving Dale a proper burial on the church graveyard. He found a small town that is already overruned and then returned to the group. As they were getting closer to Washington, D.C. he asks Eugene for an update on the radio but got in a brawl when Rick has gone to reach for the radio. It is revealed that it was empty and there was no battery in it ever, which finally confirms that he was lying about being a scientist. Right at that moment, Abraham bursts into rage and almost beat him to death. Suddenly everyone loses hope they had about going to Washington and Abraham is pissed at himself for being a fool for such a long time. He and Rick were greeted by a stranger at night when they were having a conversation with each other.

Introducing himself as Aaron, the man asks to meet the leader of the group as he is a recruiter who takes new people to join his community. But a suspicious Rick Grimes knocked him over and tied him up for interrogation. Due to their previous experience with The Governor, most of the group is skeptical about Aaron's credibility but Michonne vouched up for him. The group starts next morning for Aaron’s community, stops to assist other supply runners of the community and fights a group of Walkers in the city and then head back to home. The survivors eventually reached the gates of Alexandria Safe-Zone, which Aaron was talking about earlier. Rick and Alexandria's leader, Douglas Monroe had a chat and Rick’s group is welcomed to that Zombie-free community.

Abraham followed Rick and his son Carl to their hometown Kentucky to get supplies and they finds Rick’s old friend Morgan Jones in an unstable condition. They took Morgan with them and encounter a massive herd consisting of thousand Walkers on their way back. Rick reaches to his group after a lot of struggle but failed to ditch the herd. As a result, all of the survivors are forced to hit the road again from a remote farm house they had found for long staying and Dale is pissed off at Rick for him jeopardizing their safety. Meanwhile, one of Allen and Donna's twin sons Ben murders Billy which deeply shook up Dale. In the middle of this emotional situation, a priest, named Gabriel Stokes approaches the group seeking food, who did not receive a warm welcome.

As the rest of the group debate on Ben’s fate, he was eventually shot at the dark of night by one of the survivors. This led Dale to have a more severe emotional breakdown while Carl foul mouths him for that. Suddenly, Walkers attack the group and Dale screams for help. He assures he’s fine as soon as the undeads were all taken down. Even though all of them were skeptical about Gabriel, they followed him to his church anyway. Andrea felt that she was being watched by some unknown individual when she went to the woods to pee. Rest of the group brushed off the possibility of that. From the beginning of this Zombie apocalypse they’ve fought undeads and mad men but never before has they face such a fearful group of adversaries who are about to make their presence known.

The Walking Dead – Here We Remain | Comics

After the bloody savage massacre at the prison led by the tyrannous manic known as The Governor with Woodbury forces, which did not go as planned, Rick Grimes narrowly escaped from the prison along with Carl with their lives in hand, also ridden with guilt over Lori and Judith. The group is shattered, most of them are killed in the battle and they don’t even know where the other survivors of the group are now.

After a couple of day’s worth of journey on foot they reach to a forest where they were looking for some shelter and they stumble upon a small, empty town. When attacked by a Zombie in a nearby store, Rick was barely able to handle it with his axe and Carl managed to kill the Zombie after some struggle while also looking for supplies. Soon, they took shelter in a nearby house where Rick takes a huge dosage of antibiotics for his bullet wound and fades.

At one point Carl thought that Rick is dead when he had not responded for long but found him unconscious from the drug overdose for his bullet wound. He even considered shooting Rick thinking that he is reanimating but then stopped as he saw his father breathe. After single handedly killing three Walkers banging outside of the door at once all by himself, Carl realized that he is his own man and doesn’t need to hide in his father’s shadow anymore.

He blames Rick for the death of his mother and baby sister as well as the entire group of friends they had back at the prison. Rick however doesn't hear any of this and momentarily wakes up and requests Carl to stay inside. After a few days of rest, he gets better and unexpectedly hears a telephone ringing which he answers to have a conversation with a woman who belongs to a larger group. Rick and Carl find an unknown suicidal survivor who is ravaged by Walkers and left a load of supplies behind.

Carl was surprisingly attacked by a Walker when Rick was trying to teach him to survive on his own but Michonne showed up to help. Glenn and Maggie Greene are found, who are staying along with Dale, Andrea, Ben, Billy and Sophia in their farm. Soon, they all meet three new survivors; Abraham Ford, Rosita Espinosa and Eugene Porter who are heading to Washington, D.C. with a mission to stop the apocalypse for good.

As always, the story is cooked up by writer/creator Robert Kirkman (Battle Pope, Haunt) and artist Charlie Adlard (Judge Dredd, The X-Files). Survivors With A Mission

Many aspects of this storyline were adapted into the Season 4 of AMC's hit TV series The Walking Dead, especially the introduction of Abraham Ford, Rosita Espinosa and Eugene Porter's character to the TWD Universe. Though the introduction part happened on the second half of Season 4, because the first half of the season was entirely focused on the conflict with The Governer that has led the story at this point. This story takes us to "What We Become" arc up next where the survivors face more undead adventures in this post-apocalyptic world.

The Walking Dead – Made To Suffer | Comics

The Governor was found severely crippled with several limbs missing and taken care of by his men who had him rescued from a vengeful Michonne in the nick of time who was about to painfully torture him to death. After they barely patched him up with help from a former army medic named Bob, The Governor eventually survives. He wakes up a week after in Woodbury hospital and then waits for his man Caesar Martinez to return.

Caesar was sent with Rick Grimes and his group to follow them back to their home as a double agent for him and to locate the prison facility where the survivors were currently residing. After some searching, his men found Caesar zombified in the field. Apparently, he was killed by Rick who ran over Dale's RV on Martinez and then strangled to death when he found that the latter was going back to Woodbury.

The Governor then successfully convinces the townspeople of Woodbury to attack the prison by telling them a false story about the prison dwellers being a very aggressive and savage band of folks. He also showed Martinez's zombified decapitated head to them to prove his claims, which really shocks a lot of them. As his search parties kept looking for the prison, The Governor prepares himself by practicing shooting even though his right arm was off.

Meanwhile, he was spending time with his own zombified niece Penny and kisses her after pulling out her teeth only to throw up immediately. Then he learned that a group of soldiers from Woodbury was killed by the prison group at the National Guard Station during a confrontation of their supply run. This angers The Governor and his men to attack the prison but they wait for long. With heavy vehicles and armory they approached at the prison as one of Governor’s men was successful in locating it after weeks of searching and mapping the surrounding areas.

During the first attack, Andrea climbs on the guard tower and devastates the Woodbury forces by shooting at them. The remaining survivors debate as to run away or to fight back. Tyreese and Michonne are also captured by Governor's men while trying to turn the tides of the battle and their fate seems to be quite unsure at this point. What happens next between the two group is a savage contest of massacring each other till no one is left.

The Walking Dead – Made To Suffer

Following the events of “The Calm Before”, there comes “Made To Suffer” storyline that collects issue #43-48 of The Walking Dead monthly ongoing comic-book series from Image Comics in 2008. It also is the one volume that features the highest amount of deaths in the panels which is later surpassed by the “All Out War” story arc. Series creator and writer Robert Kirkman (Outcast, The Astounding Wolf-Man) and artist Charlie Adlard (Judge Dredd, The X-Files) created this six part plot that is succeeded by "Here We Remain" storyline which is next to this one.

Almost Dead Already

The eighth episode from Season 3 of AMC's The Walking Dead TV Series also shares the same name of the storyline. However, that episode did not feature the attack of Woodbury people led by The Governor on Rick's prison. Since AMC's TV adaptation is solely based on the source material of Robert Kirkman's work on the comics series, the third season seemed like a stretch as it concluded to Season 4 for viewers to find out what threat The Governor will pose on Rick's group. The key-elements of the violent nature of the conflict that took place on the arc was toned down for television audience when it was aired.

The Walking Dead – The Calm Before | Comics

Lori was silently thinking about the time which was initially after the worldwide outbreak when she had sex with Shane at the side of a road while Carl was sleeping inside the back of the car. As she was worrying about Rick's situation, Shane comforts her by saying that everything will be alright in the end. However, she was still unsure on how to approach Rick about it when they finally reunites. Rick talks with her about the present but Lori still seems to have been indulged into her own thoughts for a while.

Glenn and Maggie finally ties the knot of holy matrimony in the prison cafeteria with Hershel’s blessings and approval for them. Everything in the prison compound seemingly starts running back to normal again. Even though she was uncertain about how to confront Rick about this, that night, Lori finally confesses the truth she’s been hiding from Rick all along about her and Shane, noting the possibility of her unborn child could be of Shane’s and Rick confirms that he already knows this but chose not to talk about it.

Next day, Rick, Tyreese and Dale decide after a quick inventory check that they need more weaponry to defend themselves from The Governer and the Woodbury group if they are truly planning to attack on them. The group of Andrea, Axel, Glenn, Maggie, Michonne and Tyreese goes for a supply run and found the National Guard Station which the Woodbury forces were using till then and collects whatever they can along with a large army truck.

After gathering necessary supplies from there, the group blew up the station to make sure that the Woodbury men will not be able to collect anything from there. On their way back from the run, they met a few of Governor's men when they stopped at an abandoned Wal-Mart and engage in gun fight after one of them recognizes Glenn and shot at him. Back at the prison, Lori goes into labor and gives birth to a baby girl child who is named Judith.

In the middle of all that Dale got bit in the leg when he and Billy Greene went to siphon gas from the cars outside to run the generator they discovered earlier. To save him from infection and turning into a Walker, Rick quickly amputates his leg. Carol goes nuts as she loses grip over the reality of the world and there's enemy at the gates to lay waste of their new found home and take it away.

The Walking Dead – The Calm Before

The Calm Before” is the seventh storyline of The Walking Dead monthly ongoing comic-book series, which collects issue #37-42 from the title and is published from Image Comics in 2007. Series creator and regular writer Robert Kirkman (Image United, Invincible) and artist Charlie Adlard (Judge Dredd, The X-Files) continues to chronicle the events of undead apocalypse just like the previous issues. “The Calm Before” perhaps is one of the slowest running arc of the entire series.

Welcome to The Tombs

Elements shown in the book like Carol becoming suicidal was never really adapted into the live-action adaptation of The Walking Dead TV Show on AMC. Instead, Carol's character lived and became one of the long-lived characters from the show till date. The story was preceded by “This Sorrowful Life” before and is followed by the epic “Made To Suffer” storyline which also belongs to the same series and marks a great reckoning for the characters of the series.
