Supergirl | Comics

In the modern adventure, Superman met a being who calls herself Supergirl and she reveals that she was not from the doomed planet Krypton. In fact, Lex Luthor of the Time Trapper’s Pocket Universe was actually responsible for creating this Matrix Supergirl who came to Earth. She had almost all the powers like the Man of Steel including shape-shifting and invisibility.

She came looking for Superman to New Earth for his assistance to defeat three Kryptonian fugitives of the Phantom Zone. The Matrix Supergirl would follow Superman for many years in his adventures and was also a major witness of “The Death of Superman” at the hands of Doomsday. She even posed as Superman after the event to cover up for Clark Kent’s mysterious disappearance.

However, Superman have finally met his long lost Kyptonian cousin following a Kryptonite asteroid crisis (Superman/Batman – Public Enemies), when Batman found her ship submerged under water and taken her to protective custody. Superman confirms that she is in fact his cousin Kara Zor-El from Krypton.

She quickly adapted to Earth and went on Paradise Island to be trained by Wonder Woman. Her arrival on Earth drew the attention of Darkseid who attempted to kidnap and brainwash her but the Trinity traveled to Apokolips and rescued her (Superman/Batman – Supergirl from Krypton). She took the role of Supergirl after that and became friends with fellow superhero Starfire of the Teen Titans and her "cousin" Superboy.

The idea of Supergirl was actually to be a female counterpart to Superman; one of the most popular character and female superhero of DC Comics. The concept of the Matrix Supergirl was conceived by writer/artist John Byrne (Doom Patrol, John Byrne’s Next Men) who first appeared in the pages of Action Comics and later writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino created Kara Zor-El years after the Matrix Supergirl, who debuted in the Superman/Batman monthly ongoing in 2004.

During “Crisis on Infinite Earths”, the Matrix character was eventually killed off for various reasons but re-introduced again and following the “Flashpoint” crossover event, Supergirl/Kara Zor-El received a well revised and slightly altered origin story just like the other DC Comics characters in The New 52. A live-action Supergirl series for TV has been on air since 2015, where actress Melissa Benoist portrays the character.
