X-Men – The Hunt for Xavier | Comics

At Cape Citadel, Florida, a public controversy is forming regarding the launch of a rocket that is secretly programmed to track and terminate all mutants of the world. The location of the launch also stirs controversy as it was the place where the world known about the existence of mutants as Professor X's original X-Men were fighting against Magneto for the first time. Operating from the shadows, Xavier is seen recruiting Chaos, Crux, Grey King, Landslide, Mercury and Rapture to re-form his dream team of X-Men.

Along with Nightcrawler, Shadowcat and Colossus were resting by the pool abroad the cruise ship Titania after the Excalibur team has been disbanded most recently. Calling themselves the X-Men, Xavier's new recruits attacks on board Titania. While Kurt and Peter were busy on crowd-control, these newly assembled mutants abduct Kitty Pryde and take her to their so-called savior.

X-Men – The Hunt for Xavier | Comics

The X-Men team at the X-Mansion is re grouping again after the devastating events of "Operation – Zero Tolerance" and Storm is in charge of the current team. She leads fellow teammates Marrow, Rogue and Wolverine through the tunnels of Washington, D.C., through a series of defensive machines and hidden traps. After their brief meeting with X-Factor liaison Valerie Cooper about the recent developments regarding the missile launch, the X-Men are attacked by their impostors in mid-air, ensuing a battle but Nightcrawler and Colossus came to the rescue.

Afterwards, all of them goes to rescue Shadowcat and breaks her out of there after battling it out with their fake counterparts. Kitty Pryde was brought here in the first place as Xavier explained that during the time Bastion kept him, he was infected with a computer virus that now only she can cure him off. The X-Men flies back home in Blackbird and Xavier seemingly absorbed his fake recruits to take a robotic form, now calling himself Cerebro.

They soon are summoned by Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. to deal with one of their former villain Pyro. The mutant Pyro has good nuts and is flaming out intensely in Nebraska. Not only that, he's been shouting out the name of Professor Charles Xavier all the time. Storm splits the team in two groups, sending Wolverine, Colossus and Gambit after Pyro and led her own team of Marrow, Nightcrawler, Rogue and Shadowcat for crowd control.

As Storm engage to control the situation, Marrow confronts her about Xavier's action on the infamous "Mutant Massacre" event. Since Pyro is infected with the lethal Legacy Virus that is reaching to its ultimate stage, his powers are way out of their regular scale. Even Colossus felt the heat Pyro emitted in his armor mode. The X-Men were finally successful to take him down, but they are still riddled with the question that, why Pyro was frequently calling out for Xavier, when they don't share even a short history together.

After returning to the X-Mansion, they ran a search for Xavier via Cerebro but surprisingly found that currently there are two Xavier around the world! Meanwhile, the real Professor Charles Xavier was forming a new Brotherhood of Mutants consisting Blob, Post, Mimic and Toad to oppose an oncoming foe that he fears he cannot face and win alone against.

X-Men – The Hunt for Professor X

Followed from the "Operation - Zero Tolerance" crossover, "The Hunt for Xavier" is a six part crossover take that ran in the two major X-Men titles. With writer Steve Seagle teaming up with artist Chris Bachalo (Captain America – Homeland, Dark Reign – The Sinister Spider-Man) in the issues of Uncanny X-Men. Joe Kelly (Emperor Joker, Justice League Elite) and Adam Kubert (Amazing Spider-Man – Renew Your Vows, Avengers & X-Men – Axis) also filled the story in the pages of the second volume of X-Men comic series by Marvel Comics in 1998.

Since this was a six-issue crossover arc, penciller Leinil Francis Yu (New Avengers, Secret Invasion) and Pasqual Ferry (Adam Strange – Planet Heist, Superman – Ending Battle) also appeared as guest artist. Late artist Mike Wieringo (Fantastic Four, The Flash) also contributed to the X-Men issue #1/2 that is also part of the book as well. The entire concept has build upon the idea of what if Professor Xavier's long-time trusty mutant-detecting program goes rogue and how will he manage to put an end to it's menace then.
