Bane | Comics

A tactical genius with extensive combat expertise and sheer brute force at his disposal as a result of a super-steroid called Venom, Bane is one of the most formidable foes who Batman has ever faced. Grown in the harsh surroundings of Peña Duro prison in Santa Prisca, Bane was molded by darkness, who feared nothing. He was subjected to a drug known as Venom and not only did he survived, he became insanely strong.

With a desire to conquer Gotham City, he escaped Peña Duro, defeated Killer Croc to test his strength, doused The Riddler with Venom, then released the maniacs like Joker, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, Ventriloquist, Firefly, Two-Face and Zsasz from Arkham Asylum and finally he literally broke Batman's back to usher Knightfall.

Bane was eventually taken down by Jean-Paul Valley and sent to Blackgate Penitentiary. He teamed up with The Dark Knight during the crisis of No Man's Land. Later, with Talia al Ghul and her father Ra's al Ghul, he unleashed "Legacy" virus on Gotham City but is defeated by Batman.

Bane was present on Infinite Crisis with Secret Society, killing Judomaster and he returns One Year Later, looking for Hourmen to kill him for his role in creating Venom in the first place. He joins the Suicide Squad and ended up on Salvation Run, joining Lex Luthor's group. Secret Six enlisted him with Catman, Deadshot, Ragdoll and Scandal. Bane and Catman planned on being Gotham's new vigilantes to fight crime upon Batman's demise (Final Crisis) but Nightwing sends them away.

Breaking his way into the fictional world of DC Universe in 1993, Bane was created by Chuck Dixon (Batgirl – Year One, Birds of Prey), Doug Moench (Batman & Dracula – Red Rain, Batman Vs. Predator II – Bloodmatch) and Graham Nolan (The Joker – Devil's Advocate, The Phantom). Though much of his back-story remains unclear, he became a very prominent character after he literally "Broke the Bat" and this infamous act is depicted in various other media like video games and animated TV Shows.

Even in the live-action Batman film The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Bane's character was portrayed by actor Tom Hardy, who staged this infamous act on screen. When "Flashpoint" crossover event has introduced The New 52 timeline, Bane also re-emerged with an origin story that is quite similar to the post-crisis era but also picked up many other characters to develop more depth in his role.
