Onslaught Saga | Comics

Professor Charles Xavier and his team of X-Men have previously faced Magneto in his space station Avalon to stop his reign of terror (Fatal Attraction) and during the battle against the master of magnetism and his Acolytes, Magneto extracted the Adamantium from Wolverine's body after being stabbed by him, which left the latter in a withered and dying state. Seeing this, an enraged Xavier immediately attacks Magneto and wiped out his mind, left him in a catatonic state.

Unknowingly, Charles also absorbed the dark essence of Magneto's mind while attacking him, which subconsciously merged with Xavier's consciousness and creates a very powerful psionic entity called Onslaught. Xavier's decades of frustration over the events with mutants made Onslaught take an attempt to forcibly establish his year-old dream of mutant/human peaceful co-existence.

Onslaught Saga | Comics

At first, Onslaught wanted to establish Xavier's dreams through the means that Magneto used. However, he later decided to destroy all humans too anyway. He approached X-Men's former nemesis, Juggernaut but upon denial, he tore out the crimson Gem of Cyttorak from Cain Marko and left him beaten. Then Jean Grey was approached by the being to join his cause but she refused the offer too.

Onslaught also tried to recruit Xavier's X-Men to fight against humans but upon denial, he attacked them all and both parties engaged in a fight. It was when Wolverine noted that he looked more like Magneto after Onslaught pretends to be Xavier himself, the monster loose his cool and attacked the team. Onslaught now reveals his true form to the X-Men and claims that he and Xavier are one.

During their fight, Bishop absorbs a huge blast of psionic energy thrown at the X-Men from Onslaught to save his friends, while Cannonball, Cyclops, Gambit, Iceman, Phoenix, Storm and Wolverine continues the fight. Onslaught then abducts the powerful mutant child Franklin Richards of Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman by posing as a little boy named Charles. Cable's time-displaced brother Nate Grey AKA X-Man was also taken down to have more psionic power from him for himself.

Amidst this chaos, Ozymandias awakens his master Apocalypse who joins Uatu the Watcher in witnessing the end of the "Age of Wonders". The team of Fantastic Four, Avengers, an enraged Hulk and even the villainous Doctor Doom came forward to oppose Onslaught's threat to existence. Together, The Avengers and X-Men formed an alliance against the greatest threat which the world has ever seen but probably all of them will not be able to see the end of it.

"Onslaught Saga" is a major comic-book crossover event that took place in 1996, published by Marvel Comics and this event was centered on a psionic being of pure evil of the same name. The character, Onslaught was co-created by writer Scott Lobdell (Alpha Flight, Generation X) and Mark Waid (Captain America – Sentinel of Liberty, Deadpool – Sins of the Past), along with artist Andy Kubert (Damian – Son of Batman, Dark Knight III – The Master Race).

To Survive an Onslaught

Various other writers and artists have contributed in this historical Marvel event. Among them, Mark Waid's plot was something that actually stayed faithful to the core event that nearly shattered the entire Marvel universe. The drawings of Andy Kubert in the second ongoing volume of X-Men and Joe Madureira (Avenging Spider-Man – My Friends Can Beat Up Your Friends, Deadpool – The Circle Chase)'s work in Uncanny X-Men are most magnificent.

"Blink" is a four issue limited series from Marvel Comics released on 2001 by writer Scott Lobdell (Alpha Flight, Generation X) and artist Trevor McCarthy (Batman – Gates of Gotham, Nightwing). The story took place during "Age of Apocalypse" but this series was released after several years of the event simply as a tie-in book to take place during the main crossover. Writer Scott Lobdell created the character Blink along with artist Joe Madureira (Inhuman – Genesis, Savage Wolverine – Hands on a Dead Body), who would later appear in the ongoing monthly series of Exiles along with other heroes. In a brief flashback moment the team of Fantastic Four from regular Marvel Universe also appeared throughout the story. Covers of this limited series are done exclusively by artist Adam Kubert (Amazing Spider-Man – Renew Your Vows, Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine).

Astonishing X-Men (Softcover)

Released from Marvel Comics in 1995, the four issue limited series of Astonishing X-Men served as one of the core stories for the then ongoing crossover event "Age of Apocalypse" that drafted the foundation for the “Onslaught Saga” afterwards. Writer Scott Lobdell and fan favourite superstar artist Joe Madureira pitched up this storyline that is set in an alternate reality of Earth-295. It was a different take on the classic Uncanny X-Men series and Joe Mad delivered one of his finest artworks as usual.

Meanwhile, Exodus shows up to Cable's X-Force team to offer them all sanctuary from a mysterious greater power. Exodus in fact came to offer them shelter to Avalon, which was Cable's former headquarter Graymalkin in the past and the mysterious person with greater power is none other than a previously thought-dead Magneto himself, who has taken over the base and upgraded it with Shi'ar technology. Before teleporting with X-Force from Avalon, Cable nearly escapes death from the hands of the mutant master of magnetism.

Along with his team of Acolytes, Magneto came to meet the X-Men at Westchester during the funeral for Colossus' sister Illyana Rasputin, who died of the Legacy Virus that has crippled the entire mutant community for some time. After a brief fight between the X-Men and the Acolytes, Colossus switched his alliance with Magneto as he has lost his faith in the ways of Xavier and the X-Men.

Professor Xavier led the team of Jean Grey, Gambit, Quicksilver, Rogue and Wolverine to Avalon after Magneto unleashes an electromagnetic pulse causing havoc to Earth's entire electrical system, as an answer to "Magneto Protocols" by UN. After getting stabbed by Wolverine in battle, an enraged Magneto forcibly tore out the Adamantium out of Wolverine's body that led him to a near death experience as he was unable to heal himself from major injuries.

This sudden act of violence made Professor X snap and he mind-wipes Magneto in retaliation, leaving him into a vegetative state on Avalon. The X-Men took Wolverine back to their base for treatment as he was being unable to regenerate himself and Colossus left behind to look after Magneto.
