Batman – The Long Halloween | Comics

The Falcone family are one of the most influential crime families of Gotham City and Carmine "The Roman" Falcone was desperately seeking a means to dry-clean the dirty cash of his family business. So, he tries to tamper and book the most powerful personalities of the city; including the president of Gotham City Bank to Billionaire Playboy Bruce Wayne.

But Bruce refuses to co-operate with the mob and got warned by them for his denial. Before getting into his regular crime patrol, Bruce met Selina Kyle at the party and they dance together which Falcone's sister Carla Viti watches attentively. A serial killer appears on Gotham City killing people on holidays, quickly dubbed as the Holiday Killer.

Batman, along with Police Captain Jim Gordon and the enthusiastic new District Attorney Harvey Dent takes it upon themselves to end Falcone's rule over Gotham City and Catwoman unexpectedly offers Batman her helping hand in doing so. At night, they secretly invade Roman's penthouse but is forced to flee upon the arrival of guards.

While trying to solve the mystery of who the actual killer is, Batman steps in the middle of an ensuing gang-war between Gotham's two most powerful crime families. Psychotic villains like The Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy and The Riddler appears in the scene with their own chaotic schemes to terrorize Gotham. District Attorney Harvey Dent; a former ally in crime fighting, tragically reforms to a villain named Two-Face after his face got disfigured by a horrific accident that dissolved part of his face.

Absolute Batman – The Long Halloween

Writer Jeph Loeb (Batman – Hush, Emperor Joker) and artist Tim Sale (Batman – Haunted Knight, Challengers of the Unknown Must Die) brought up the story arc of Batman – The Long Halloween during 1996 to 1997. It was a thirteen issue monthly limited series published by DC Comics. It is believed to be the continuous story of "Batman – Year One". Batman – The Long Halloween is considered number five of the 25 Best Batman Graphic Novels of All Time.

It worked as an influence for the movie Batman Begins (2005) and several of its elements are later used in the sequel The Dark Knight (2008). Following the success of Batman – The Long Halloween, the same creative team of Loeb and Sale later worked on two limited series, Batman – Dark Victory and Catwoman – When in Rome afterwards, which was also well received and praised by the fans.

Black Widow | Comics

A relative to the Romanoffs, at childhood, Natasha Romanoff was saved by Ivan Petrovich during the chaos of World War II. Then Baron Strucker got his hands on her and she was handed over to The Hand to become a master assassin but rescued by Captain America, Logan (yet to become Wolverine) and Ivan.

As she grew up she learnt ballet, chose the career of espionage and is then recruited by the K.G.B. to become their first operative known as Black Widow. Then she fought HYDRA, met Logan for a second time years later, dated Iron Man and then she met up with Hawkeye, who were unaware of her K.G.B. origins and was a criminal back then. He eventually joined The Avengers and Natasha remained an ally while working for S.H.I.E.L.D.

To go solo, she broke up with Hawkeye and start fighting crime in New York, where she found Daredevil and they dated for a while. She moved with the crowd of Ghost Rider, Hercules and the X-Men’s Angel and Iceman to form The Champions, which didn’t last long. She again partnered up with Daredevil to stop The Hand from getting their hands on the corpse of Elektra.

As a member of The Avengers, she led the team many times and slowly develops a crush on Captain America but ended up sleeping with Tony. Her role as the leader of the team finally came to an end during “Onslaught” event. Throughout the crisis of Civil War, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign and Siege, Natasha is proven to be pretty instrumental for her team.

As well as appearing in other monthly ongoing titles, Black Widow also features in her own streak of limited series till now.

Batman – Dead to Rights | Comics

During a working day, Batman drops The Joker in front of a police station after capturing him on his regular patrol. Upon putting him on cell the psychotic freak has crippled the other inmates in the cell. Furious at this, officer Geoff hits him hard and The Joker then fakes a phone call that he was intend to call his lawyer.

In actual, he called Geoff's wife home and told her to hang herself by convincing her of having an incurable disease and her husband cannot bear the mammoth expense that follows the treatment for her care.So, it would be better for her husband if she kills herself and she does commit suicide at which, Officer Geoff totally breaks down mentally and lost control over his sense of morality.

Meanwhile, The Joker starts terrorizing by playing fatal pranks on everyone around the police station and courtyard as well. Starting from the inmates to the Judge and is placed away for his uncontrollable maniacal actions. Wearing a disguise, Batman eventually confronts The Joker in cell but the clown prince quickly recognizes his true self.

As Joker is pleased to meet the bat, he is not quite interested in his secret identity. Soon, Batman's life gets on the ropes as the former officer Geoff returns to exact his vengeance for his wife's death for which he thinks both Batman and The Joker are responsible as same. Reformed as Bad Cop, Geoff has successfully apprehends both The Dark Knight and the Clown by surprise for their previous actions.

Depicting one of the early encounters of Batman with his long time arch-nemesis, Joker, writer Andrew Kreisberg and artist Scott McDaniel (Batman – Impostors, Green Arrow) did this story back in 2010.

Alien – The Illustrated Story | Comics

In the year of 2122, Weyland Industries has sent the commercial spaceship USCSS Nostromo on a space excursion with seven of its crew members in stasis. The ship’s artificial intelligence MU-TH-UR 6000 awakes her crews from their hyper-sleep upon receiving an unknown distress transmission from a nearby planetoid, LV-426.

Nostromo lands on the planetoid after being detached from the refinery. Captain Dallas, Executive Officer Kane and Navigator Lambert proceeds to find out the source of the transmission, leaving Warrant Officer Ripley, Science Officer Ash and Engineers Brett and Parker behind to observe their activities. The source of the distress signal was located in a the wishbone-shaped derelict alien spacecraft.

As Ripley decodes the signal as some sort of warning, the crews inside the derelict finds a corpse of an alien being and Kane is choked with a scorpion like creature with a spine-like tail that has attached to his face when he was inspecting a hidden chamber containing a lot of egg-like leathery capsule.

Dallas and Lambert immediately abort their investigation and took Kane to Nostromo for medical attention. Despite Ripley’s denial, Ash allowed them in and they unsuccessfully try to remove the Facehugger which eventually dies after releasing Kane but soon he also dies when a small, hideous alien creature came bursting through his chest and hid inside the dark corners of the ship. What the crews does not knew till then is that they have a horror out of hell hiding in their ship.

Though the publication right of the Aliens franchise was late obtained by Dark Horse Comics, in 2012, the original black and white version of the book is reprinted in colored edition. The novelization of the plot garnered critical acclaim even from the creators of the film as they noted that it was even better that the movie.
