Batman – The Court of Owls | Comics

Gotham City is taken aback by a series of murders by Court of Owls and Batman begins to unravel their deadly mystery.

Despite many people seeing Gotham City as a lost cause, it sure is home for some dangerous criminal minds and their utmost dread, Batman. On news of a sudden breakout at Arkham Asylum, he enters to contain its deranged inmates and he held himself against the mob with his superior skills until he was thrown out by a window.

As he was preparing to get back, he is found by his arch enemy The Joker and forming a brief alliance, these two rain on them. Later, he meets Commissioner Gordon on the rooftops of GCPD Headquarters to discuss how it went down. When asked about his latest team-up with Clown Prince of Crime, Gordon is reassured before he left.

In Batcave, Joker comes to Bruce, who tells him to take off his mask and it was revealed to be Dick Grayson. They tag along with Damian Wayne and Tim Drake to attend a gala to announce plans for future of Gotham. Bruce is introduced to mayoral candidate Lincoln March by Gotham Gazette reporter Vicki Vale following his speech.

Some evidence and found DNA from crime scene led him to suspect his partner Nightwing to be murderer. Shortly afterwards, Batman performed an autopsy on the corpse and Jim Gordon suggests a possible connection to Court of Owls, an urban legend of Gotham but refusing that theory, he states that these are legends that don't exist.

Next day, Bruce is attacked by a deadly Talon assassin during his meeting with Lincoln March at Wayne Manor. In an ensuing fight, they both fall from top but he landed on a gargoyle while his assailant falls onto a car. Although presumed dead, the Talon wakes up later midway and slaughters entire emergency medical team before escaping.

Bruce comes to know of a secret legion of Gotham, which is centuries old called the Court of Owls and with more information from Alfred Pennyworth, he finally discovers a very old connection between them and his great-great-grandfather Alan Wayne, leading him into investigate for their hidden bases throughout Gotham.

When he was looking inside a building funded in recent years by Alan Wayne Trust, it suddenly explodes as a Talon watches. Batman barely made it out back home and begins an autopsy on remains of Alan Wayne to learn that he was killed in same manner like their earlier murder victim who was tortured to death using throwing knives.

He then goes back to sewer, where Alan Wayne was found dead years ago and a Talon caught him by surprise. Waking up, Batman discovers himself into a giant labyrinth. Over there, he spent nearly a week wandering around to find a way out.

Finally, the Court came to a decision of slowly torturing their most worthy enemy to death and a Talon assigned to do that job came stabbing him from behind. He brutally tortured Bruce to a point where he was unable to withstand unbearable pain and even wished to die but then something inside him took over to fight back from his captivity.

Following a universe-shattering "Flashpoint" crossover event in 2011, writer Scott Snyder (The Wake, Wytches) creates a modern day Batman legacy through "The Court of Owls" by teaming-up with artist Greg Capullo (Haunt, Spawn), which will become a staple in DC Comics history and start off a new chapter in life of The Dark Knight.

Even his journey in Prime Earth kicks-off by fending off a mob of Black Mask, Clayface, El Flamingo, James Gordon, Jr., Killer Croc, Mister Freeze, Phosphorus Rex, Professor Pyg, Scarecrow, Sumo, The Riddler, Two-Face, Ventriloquist and Zsasz from his Rogues' gallery at once to authenticate his lore as Caped Crusader of Gotham.

Maze of Nightmare

Entire DC Universe saw a massive overhaul for many of its renowned heroes and villains in The New 52 wave. Therefore, Batman gets a rebooted origin tale that began long before his parents were killed in Crime Alley. Court of Owls presents him with a new age of threat that he ignored for too long but realized how wrong he was in the end.

Snyder breaks off a very common stereotype of Batman being an undefeated force of night by putting him up against an unstoppable foe like Talon assassin and it sparked a never before seen reaction in him. "The Court of Owls" plot then lead directly to "Night of the Owls" crossover-event and is continued in "City of Owls" storyline.

DC Comics have hired writer Alan Burnett; the talent behind the DC Animation Universe (Superman Adventures, Batman Beyond), to pitch a plot for the Superman/Batman monthly ongoing comics series along with artist Dustin Nguyen (Batman – As the Crow Flies, Thanos – A God Up There Listening) in 2008. These two talented creators came up with this six part story "Torment", which ran from issue #37-42 of this series and helped linking between the previous events to the current course of action. The story somewhat delivers an aftershock of events that has took place in the series so far and of course a fine conclusion.

The Dark Knight however, sees her trail and starts to give a chase over the rooftops.

In mid air, someone cut his Bat-Line from the shadows and caused him to fall on ground from a great height. He receives a severe damage to skull and couldn't move at all while landing on the vile streets of Crime Alley. When he was falling to his uncertain fate, she was completely unaware of it and ran off with the money to hand it over to Poison Ivy.

Unable to even move a muscle, Batman is surrounded by street thugs and Oracle sends out a distress signal to fellow vigilantes for his rescue. Fortunately Huntress was nearly and she responds to the emergency signal by arriving to rescue The Bat as soon as she could. She fought her hardest to a standstill until transportation was sent to their location.

She puts his body inside the Batmobile and it takes off before she leaves too in her motorcycle, as someone watches over and makes remark about the importance of friends in life. In Batcave, Alfred Pennyworth patches him up and a near-unconscious Bruce tells him thorough Morse code to call his childhood friend Thomas Elliot.

Tommy Elliot is a renowned neurosurgeon of the world and a close personal friend of Bruce Wayne, who performs a brain surgery on him to save his life. He then unexpectedly proceeds to break out of his cell to make an escape upon tossing out everyone on his way. Batman immediately goes after him but the tire of Batmobile was shot during this chase, which threw him off the track for a brief time. Croc has gotten his hands onto Catwoman and he was about to off her for stealing his money.

She was saved at the last moment by the Caped Crusader and Selina reveals that she stole the money for Ivy in a mind-controlled state. These two head over to Metropolis for further investigation only to encounter Poison Ivy with a mind-controlled Superman at her side. It took almost everything for The Dark Knight just to restrain Man of Steel.

The duo gets back to Gotham City to gather at an Opera as Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle without knowing each other's secret identity, along with Tommy Elliot and Leslie Thompkins. The stage is taken by Harley Quinn and her masked henchmen, so Batman had to intervene but she goes all out guns blazing and Catwoman ended up getting shot.

Changing back to his cowl, Batman chases after Harley hears a gunshot outside, which led him to The Joker looming over the lifeless body of his pal Tommy Elliot. In a violent fit of rage, he viciously beats the clown down with an inch of his life and both Selina and Commissioner Jim Gordon finally managed to stop him from crossing the line.

Following the funeral for Tommy, Nightwing came to see Bruce and they go out to stop the Riddler after an armored car robbery. At this point, Bruce and Selina both knew about their dual life as they have chosen to trust each other with their secret.

Trails from Lazarus Pit lead him to seek attention of Ra's al Ghul by kidnapping his daughter Talia al Ghul following a showdown between the two while Lady Shiva savagely beats down Catwoman to a pulp. A run-in with Scarecrow causes Huntress to turn against Selina and Harvey Dent makes a surprising return, who is no longer Two-Face.

Batman is suspicious about a resourceful new mysterious enemy working from shadows who is responsible for his allies and enemies to acting weird and out of their characters. This is someone who knows a lot about him and he cannot even trust his allies now. Plus, a person believed long-dead from past makes a surprise return to haunt him.

Bane | Comics

A tactical genius with extensive combat expertise and sheer brute force at his disposal as a result of a super-steroid called Venom; Bane is one of the most formidable foes who Batman has ever came across in his crime-fighting career. Grown into harsh surroundings of Peña Duro prison in Santa Prisca, he was a being born and molded by darkness that feared nothing.

He was subjected to an experimental drug known as Venom and not only did he survived, he became insanely strong. Bane is a unique combination of brains with brawns, which makes him deadlier than most of The Dark Knight's other enemies.

Vengeance of Bane
Most of his early years from childhood were spent within the walls of Peña Duro prison of Santa Prisca. He was serving prison time off his father's life sentence along with his mother until the day she died. Young Bane witnessed his mother being thrown off to shark-infested waters around that prison as her funeral by prison guards.

The boy started developing both mentally and physically by reading a lot of books and working out at gym. He committed his first murder at the age of eight and gained respect from his fellow inmates very soon.

Growing up, he earned loyal companionship of Bird, Trogg and a physician named Zombie, who recognized potential of his strength and intelligence. He grew quite a reputation around Peña Duro that even their warden became concerned and placed him put him in solitary confinement for a decade.

Yet he didn't break and then a scientific research team took him as their test subject to run experiments on him. Though no has survived the process before, Bane came out alive and stronger with an addictive super-steroid Venom in his system.

Broken Bat
With a desire to conquer Gotham City and destroy its protector Batman, he escaped Peña Duro with several of his friends. He heard stories about The Dark Knight and how Gotham was ruled by his fear among criminals. He engaged in a brawl with menacing villain Killer Croc and defeated him to test his strength.

His duel with Croc left the latter with two broken arms. Then to test his opponent, he doused The Riddler with Venom and turning him into a hulking version of himself to become both physical and mental challenge for Batman.

In his attempt to keep his target occupied, he then released the maniacs like Joker, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter, Ventriloquist, Firefly, Two-Face and Zsasz from Arkham Asylum, which took Batman months to round up.

When he found Robin trying to follow him, he captured the boy wonder but a surprising intervention from Killer Croc seeking vengeance on Bane saved him. Finally he got into Wayne Manor after figuring out his secret identity and literally broke Batman's back to usher Knightfall by leaving him paraplegic.

Knightquest
Right after he took down The Dark Knight, Bane took care of major gangs in Gotham and even offered Catwoman to join, which she refused. Soon, he realized that there was another Batman in town and sends his men to check out who that is.

In Bruce Wayne's absence, Jean-Paul Valley has taken the mantle and found Bane but their fight was interrupted. Pumping venom into his system, he confronted Jean-Paul who came wearing an armored Batsuit. They struggled with each other for some time, only for the former to be defeated and getting captured before being taken away to Blackgate Penitentiary.

Legacy
For several months, he remained catatonic in Blackgate until the night Bruce Wayne finally recovered and returned as Batman. He recovered his addiction to Venom, served his time and then left Gotham looking for his father. According to a lead from the priest of Peña Duro, Bane went Rome searching but met with Talia al Ghul instead, who introduced him to her father Ra's al Ghul.

The international eco-terrorist was so impressed with his talents that he even chose to make him as his heir. They launched an outbreak of Apocalypse Virus on Gotham and he had a rematch with Batman, who came out victorious this time.

Infinite Crisis
Years after, Bane returned to Santa Prisca to find out a new variation of Venom is now being distributed to public. After destroying everyone and everything related to the drug, he came to know that its formula was taken from a strength enhancing pill called Miraclo, created by chemist Rex Tyler who was the original Hourman and a member of both Justice Society of America and All-Star Squadron. When the battle of Metropolis broke in, he was there with other villains and killed Judomaster by breaking his back with his signature move.

One Year Later
When the crisis on Earth was finally over, he came looking for Rex Tyler for his involvement in creation of Miraclo, which then led to the making of Venom. As he broke in and starts manhandling Rex, his son Rick Tyler arrives to the scene after seeing Bane coming after his father in time vision.

He claimed that he was forcibly hooked on with Venom once again by Santa Prisca mob and is sent after Rex Tyler's formula. When he was completely assured of having no documents of that formula exists anywhere, he making on the father-son duo.

Breaking his way into the fictional world of DC Universe in 1993, Bane was created by writer Chuck Dixon (Batgirl – Year One, Birds of Prey) and Doug Moench (Batman & Dracula – Red Rain, Batman Vs. Predator II – Bloodmatch) with artist Graham Nolan (The Joker – Devil's Advocate, The Phantom).

Though much of his back-story remains unclear to audience and his foes, he became a very prominent character after he literally "Broke the Bat" in his debut story-arc Knightfall and this infamous act is depicted in various other medias like Batman – Arkham series of video games and several other animated TV Shows over years. This has become a signature-move for him and he actually repeated this act with few other characters as well.

bane dark knight rises
Bane of Evil

Even in the live-action Batman film The Dark Knight Rises (2012), actor Tom Hardy played Bane's character and staged this infamous act on screen. After that, mainstream media became aware of his ruthlessness and soon this character has been stepping out of comic-book pages too often than he used to.

When "Flashpoint" crossover event has introduced The New 52 timeline, Bane also re-emerged with a brand-new origin story that is quite similar to the post-crisis era but also picked up many other characters to develop more depth in his role. It delved deeper into his past after DC Rebirth shook things up for Prime Earth and a darker back-story was unfolded.
