Superman – Black Dawn | Comics

A sinister entity has been keeping an eye on Superman and his family in Hamilton County. Then the Dynamic Duo came to see young Superboy.

The Kent family has been living in Hamilton County for some time as Superman slowly adjusts to this new world. With his wife Lois Lane and boy Jon Kent, Clark is living the simple life he used to lead on Smallville. Jon is getting along fine with Kathy Branden, granddaughter of their neighbor Cobb.

At night, Batman and Robin pay a secret visit to Kent Farm to talk to Clark about something important about his son as Superboy secretly watches but all are caught and brought inside the house for some apple pie by Lois.

When Clark asked, Bruce revealed that as a full healthy human-Kryptonian hybrid Jon have the capacity to surpass the great power of his father and by now, he should have had been at full power, whereas Jon can barely fly. So, he suspects something is holding the boy back and asks if they notice anything suspicions around.

When everyone went to sleep, he decides to Cobb's Dairy and sneaks into their farm to collect some fresh milk sample from the cow Bessie but suddenly, he is attacked by black liquid that captures him.

The next morning, Cobb and Kathy arrives to deliver Bessie's fresh milk for Jon and Damian Wayne is introduced to them as Garth. As he departs, Cobb pats on Krypto's head and it appears that he has some psychic influence on the dog.

Later, Batman is nowhere to be found which even surprises Damian. Robin, Superboy and Superman go on a patrol over Hamilton County to locate Bruce but are interrupted by a giant squid creature they fought before in the arctic (Son of Superman).

With much less effort, the trio handled the situation but it was Jon's brash actions that saved lives in the end. Superman heads to Deadman's Swamp after sending the boys home. Damian and Jon were bickering while they were returning and as it started to become a fight, Kathy intervenes by chocking him up in the air with her telekinesis.

She even managed to redirect Jon's heat-vision. Meanwhile, Superman discovers Batman, Frankenstein, Robin, The Bride and many others stuck in some containment underground. Back home, Lois was getting worried upon having no words from her husband or son and go out investigate.

She is confronted by fellow townspeople Candice, Doc Brooks, Mayor Goodman, Mr. Martinez and Officer Haggart at her house and makes a break for it in the Batmobile using the Hellbat Gauntlet. She was eventually stopped by Cobb Branden and Superman quickly rushed to the spot hearing her cry. Cobb is soon taken care of and Clark flies off with Lois.

She points out that lately, Hamilton County has become a target for various monstrosities and as he tries to help the people, Lois is severely injured in this chaos. Elsewhere, Jon is being forced to watch his friends and family in peril and sheds tears for them but then his mysterious captor came out of shadows and revealed himself as Manchester Black, one of Superman's old enemies.

Superman – Black Dawn

"Black Dawn" marks the fourth Superman storyline of DC Rebirth era following "Multiplicity" and "Trials of the Super Son" from DC Comics. The story takes place on the fourth ongoing volume of Superman in 2017, collecting issues #20-26.

Plotted out by the duo of writers Patrick Gleason (Brightest Day, Sinestro Corps War) and Peter Tomasi (Batman – Arkham Knight, Black Adam – The Dark Age), artist Doug Mahnke (Final Crisis, Justice League Elite) was brought on board to do the illustrations for the arc alongside Gleason, who also wrote several issues for the plot.

Introducing Superboy Black

Even though it was a plot set on solo Superman comic series, the primary focus revolves around Clark's son Jon Kent, the new Superboy. There is even a scene where Clark lectures Jon about the consequences of choices he made much like the way actor Kevin Costner's character Jonathan Kent does to a young Clark Kent in 2013's Man of Steel film.

In pre-Flashpoint reality, Manchester Black used to hang out with his super-team The Elite but this Prime Earth version is aided by the group of Super-Elite. The story will be going onward followed by "Hopes and Fears" storyline as the series advances.

Super Sons – When I Grow Up | Comics

Despite having very little in common among them, Robin and Superboy tries to stop Kid Amazo to take on entire Justice League!

On his way to school with his next-door neighbor Kathy Branden, Jon Kent took side of a bullied boy that led him into a quarrel with few bullies, who arranged a snowball fight to hurt his friends. As Jon was about to lose his cool, the timely intervention of Damian Wayne saved the day, who was disguised as their bus driver and a substitute teacher.

That night, when Batman was going out on patrol, he ditched an enthusiastic Damian behind for falling back on his homework. On Hamilton County, Superman flies off for a Justice League related emergency and Lois sends Jon to his bed afterwards.

Just as he hit the sack, Damian sneaks back on him to take Jon along with him to investigate a case of break-ins at LexCorp, Metropolis which freaked out the latter for a moment. Both Robin and Superboy were making their way onto the top of the tower when they find Lex Luthor floating behind them in his new "Superman" armor.

Since, Jon can't really fly, Robin throws Superboy down for Lex to rescue while he makes it to an unmarked level to look into but found Luthor back on his tail soon enough. These two make an escape but Robin manages to copy the security log before that.

Jon took a look at the log and is able to detect a boy walking inside for the android Amazo and then camera goes dead. The boy is then seen in multiple places at the same time and Robin identifies him as Reggie Meyer using Batman's facial recognition database.

There was an outbreak of the Amazo Virus which grant people power but all of them were cured then (Justice League – Injustice League). Reggie and his family were among the five percent who kept theirs and they formed the team "Super Duffies" to fight villains.

Tracking the last known location of Reggie's family, the Super Sons head to Providence, Rhode Island. Robin was going through some old newspaper articles when Superboy discovered the deceased bodies of Reggie's family and decides to call their dads.

Disagreement on the point led Jon to push Damian away and run into Reggie's younger sister Sara in the woods. Damian thought Jon has come back but it was the Man of Steel standing behind him and The Dark Knight ready to creep on Jon in the jungle.

The hostile attitude of the World's Finest against the Super Sons has proved that they were actually some android doppelgangers sent by Reggie AKA Kid Amazo. Sara being a technopath helps them take down many those robots and explains Reggie's plan of stealing the Amazo Armor from LexCorp next.

Using which he is creating "Amazo" duplicates that can replicate any power they came in contact with. As Robin is still reluctant about calling their dads or the Justice League, he and Jon are quickly surrounded by dozens of duplicates of themselves.

Super Sons – When I Grow Up

After having a few unofficial team-ups to fight crime under the cautious supervision of their over-protective fathers, Robin and Superboy finally have their very own monthly ongoing series titled Super Sons from DC Comics in 2017, which probably is one of the best gift we received from the DC Rebirth run so far.

The first storyline of their official team-up "When I Grow Up" collects issues #01-05 from the series. It is plotted by writer Peter Tomasi (Batman – Arkham Knight, Forever Evil – Arkham War) and he was assisted by artist Jorge Jiménez (Superman – The Final Days of Superman, Superman – Trials of the Super Sons) with his impressive drawing skills.

Super Sons Strike Out

The story focuses on a solo mission Damian Wayne begin on his own when his father left him behind from regular patrol duty but quickly realizing he needs someone to aid him on it and he then approached Jonathan Kent to pick him up as some extra-muscle from Hamilton County while both of their fathers was away.

Aside from Batman and Superman, Alfred Pennyworth and Lois Smith appearing in the story for their very important role of keeping the Super Sons in line. Following the core plot, there is a brawl in the Batcave between these two unsettling youngsters akin to the one seen in "Trials of the Super Sons", to set out their differences.

Batman & The Flash – The Button | Comics

When reality was being remade, Batman found a strange smiley-face button in Batcave that opens doorway to a twisted alternate timeline.

In Arkham Asylum, inmates were watching a hockey game between the Gotham Blades and the Metropolis Mammoths, when suddenly at one point a woman among them starts irrationally shouting with the claim that one of them is about to die and even Superman will not be able to save him.

She kept screaming about the death of her friends and a Legion as she was being taken away. In Batcave, Batman was also observing the match from his Batcave while studying the Comedian's bloodied smiley-face button on his hand.

Ever since "The Return of Wally West", Batman and The Flash are trying to uncover the origin of the Button with no luck so far. He tossed it on his desk and it drops near Psycho-Pirate's Medusa Mask, creating a small spark, which The Dark Knight didn't notice.

Then it creates a bolt and Bruce Wayne sees Thomas Wayne of the Flashpoint timeline for a moment like a shadow but he quickly faded away as Bruce tries to reach out to him. He informs Flash about this development, who was busy fighting the Samuroids and says he will meet The Bat within a minute.

Before the minute passed, Bruce hears a thunder and thinking its Barry, he turns around only to be punched out by the villainous Reverse-Flash. Eobard Thawne has been known dead for some time but somehow, he is back to life by a mysterious force.

For the next 50 seconds, Batman desperately tries to tackle and delay Reverse-Flash till Flash's arrival to no avail. As he gets his ass handed to him, Batman still fights back and tries to slow him down for a while. Eobard discovers the letter that Thomas wrote to Bruce and then tears it to pieces to taunt him some more.

Batman warns him to leave his cave before halting him for a while till the minute passes and then is beaten out-cold. Seeing the Comedian's Button on the desk, Thawne picks it up and is teleported away immediately with a flash of light. He came back only mere moments after with his flesh severely burned and bones out, shouting that he has seen "GOD" before dropping dead.

The Flash arrived just late enough to save the Caped Crusader from a ruthless beating and missed the demise of his nemesis Reverse-Flash. Johnny Thunder was calling out for Thunder-Bolt and was ranting that how he was responsible for the fall of Justice Society before being taken back at his elderly home by the orderlies.

Meanwhile, Barry set up the Batcave as a crime scene after Batman's fight with Thawne. He realizes that what Thawne started years earlier with killing his mother has come to an end with his death even though justice wasn't served. Upon examining Thawne's remains, Barry realizes that they both have same Speed Force signature, whereas it should be different.

Since all the cameras of the cave were destroyed during the fight, he decides to talk to Bruce about it. When Bruce tells him of seeing Thomas Wayne from Flashpoint world, Barry blames himself for all these mishaps but Bruce then points out Thawne seeing a "GOD" means, there was already someone powerful messing around with the time and reality.

Not willing to endanger the life of his friends, Barry decides to fire up his Cosmic Treadmill to go back in time to see who really killed Eobard Thawne. At the last moment, Bruce shows up and tags along against Barry's wishes. The two eventually travels back to the timeline where Thomas Wayne became The Dark Knight!

Batman/The Flash – The Button

Connecting threads that were left hanging from the beginning of the "DC Rebirth" and will tie-in to upcoming ground-breaking crossover events to come, "The Button" is a four-part crossover story that is the handiwork of writers Joshua Williamson (Predator – Fire And Stone, The Flash – Lightning Strikes Twice) and Tom King (Batman – I Am Bane, Batman – I Am Suicide).

Artists Howard Porter (Trials of Shazam, Underworld Unleashed) and Jason Fabok (Justice League – Darkseid War, Justice League – Injustice League) has tagged along to help complete the arc as well.

Storm in Timestream

The story-arc took place on the third ongoing volume of Batman monthly series and the fifth monthly ongoing series of The Flash back-to-back, published by DC Comics on 2017. The presumably long-dead villain Reverse-Flash is brought back with a twist and the Watchmen connection to the post-Rebirth era is also showcased.

Plus, the original Flash, Jay Garrick makes a cameo appearance to make it all very special. The plot serves as a prelude to upcoming "Doomsday Clock" event, which will unfold a lot of mysteries and answer a lot of questions.

Red Hood and the Outlaws – Who Is Artemis | Comics

Though Red Hood and Bizarro knows very little about Amazon warrior Artemis, they all stands together when her past comes to strike back.

In absence of Gotham City crime-lord Black Mask, Red Hood decides to step up and scare the goons of the former mob-boss away but faced with hostility from them. When they came at him, Bizarro shows up all of a sudden and starts trashing the mobs.

As the flawed Superman clone and ex-Robin was doing the clean-up, Killer Croc of Suicide Squad throws Jason Todd up out of nowhere. Feeling extremely protective about Red Hood, Bizarro freezes his head and punched it off, only to reveal it was a synthezoid.

Jason shares his concern about Bizarro to Artemis, who shows him classified videos at LexCorp that all the Bizarro clones were meant to be destroyed because their unstable nature poses a threat to everyone. For the safe of every other living being, Jason makes up his mind to take care of the matter and visits the Batcave to acquire the means to do that.

To put him out of his misery, Jason takes Bizarro on a trip to a riverside where the latter explains how he sees him and Artemis as his only friends and eventually, his positive perspective convinced Jason of keeping up instead of killing him.

Jason asks her about Akila and Artemis starts telling about her time in the fallen town of Bana-Mighdall, training with her best friend to be the champion of her people. Ages before, one of the Amazon foremothers had a clash with Queen Hippolyta and then they departed from Themyscira as a new pantheon of gods took them in.

Akila was a champion of the Amazons of Bana-Mighdall and never wanted to become Shim'tar. One day she vanished without a trace and was found by Artemis, who was sure that her friend has been summoned by the gods. When invaders from Qurac attacked, she picked up the Bow of Ra and in an attempt to save her people, Akila doomed them all.

Artemis reached at the scene too late and found Wonder Woman there to take the threat down. Although she attacked Diana at first but soon they teamed-up to defeat Akila possessed by Ra, killing her and Bow of Ra was lost.

Today, Red Hood, Artemis and Bizarro go to K'kyesh, Qurac seeing news of chaos by unidentified weapon of mass destruction back there. After their plane is shot out off sky, Bizarro got stranded, Jason is captured by the men of Qurac's General Ahmed Heinle and Artemis faces a ghost from the past.

Red Hood and the Outlaws – Who Is Artemis

The second monthly ongoing volume of Red Hood and the Outlaws brings the storyline, "Who Is Artemis" from DC Comics in 2017. It all begins from the previous story arc "Dark Trinity" at the dawn of DC Rebirth, where Artemis stumbled onto Jason Todd as she was looking for the missing Bow of Ra and now concluding the plot in "Who Is Artemis".

Collecting issues #07-11, the storyline is composed by veteran comic-book writer Scott Lobdell (Alpha Flight, Generation X), who was aided by artists Dexter Soy (Batman – Arkham Knight – Genesis, DC Universe Vs. Masters of the Universe), Kenneth Rocafort (Madame Mirage, Velocity) and Mirko Colak.

While characters like Batman, The Joker and Lex Luthor appears throughout the story in holograms or visions, Alfred Pennyworth and Wonder Woman made actual cameo appearance. Since Artemis is now a part of Red Hood's Outlaws, Jason took it upon himself and Bizarro to aid her and thus, the bond of the Outlaws became greater than ever.

The first Bizarro was actually a creature dubbed as Subject B-0 that died saving Luthor from the assault of Crime Syndicate during the events of "Forever Evil". The one that is hanging out with Artemis and Jason is Bizarro II from one of Lex's latter experiments.

The Dark Knight III – The Master Race | Comics

Three years have passed since anyone seen The Dark Knight of Gotham City and other heroes have retreated while a Master Race rises.

The Dark Knight has been gone after the fall of Lex Luthor's tyrannical reign and demise of a Joker-like Dick Grayson, who was hell-bent on killing off elderly heroes. Batman has been gone off the grids for three years now and Bruce Wayne is also nowhere to be found. Because of his long absence, many believe that he is dead and not coming back this time.

Someone enters the Batcave to shatter down a display case where the Batsuit was hanging and took it. Suddenly, images of a shrouded figure beating up trigger-happy cops chasing an unarmed suspect blows up on media, who appears to be Batman.

In a forest, Wonder Woman is fighting a giant Minotaur while holding her young son Jonathan on her back to save the natives from it. Upon defeating the creature, Diana heads back to Paradise Island for a sparring session with her daughter Lara, only to learn that she is gone.

Always questioned about her inheritance, she finds Superman inside the Fortress of Solitude, who has willingly frozen himself on an icy throne. Hearing noise, Lara discovers the Bottle City of Kandor, which she then takes to Ray Palmer AKA The Atom and asks for his help to restore the shrunken city of Kandor.

The Mayor hired a P.R. firm to handle the situation as Commissioner Ellen Yindel is being bombard with question from journalists regarding her thoughts on the return of Batman. Later, as she was thinking about current situation, a sighting of the vigilante alarmed her. With cops in pursuit, the mysterious figure violently fights back when surrounded.

After the angry mob of police was done beating, Yindel unmasks the person and it turns out to be Carrie Kelley in Bat costume, who used to be former Robin. Commissioner asks Carrie about Bruce Wayne's whereabouts and she claims him to be dead.

A badly-beaten Carrie is taken into custody for interrogation but Commissioner Yindel had no success at all. While transferring her to Blackgate, the tank-like Batmobile comes crushing at her rescue and she escapes in it. She returns to Batcave to see Bruce Wayne standing over, waiting for her arrival.

Lara approaches Doctor Palmer with a resident of Kandor named Baal seeking help to restore their city. Ray reveals that his past attempts gone horribly wrong to Lara and Baal but then she storms off hearing her mother's call. When returned to new Amazon city, she engaged in sparring with her mother.

Upon calibrating his shrinking tech and required variables about Kryptonian physiology, Ray takes the Bottle City of Kandor in a desert and brought back Kandor citizens in full-size. He then realized many of them were dead at the hands of a fanatic cult led by Baal's father Quar. Ray is shrunk using his own technology and stepped over by Baal.

His father then obliterates the bottle city and its remaining inhabitants for not following him. Quar makes a demand to the world that he and his followers are to be accepted as Gods or perish. Realizing he is too old to fight them, Bruce pays a visit to Fortress of Solitude.

Following the ground-breaking success of "The Dark Knight Returns" and "The Dark Knight Strikes Again", writer Frank Miller (300, Ronin) returned with third installment of The Dark Knight Trilogy from DC Comics in 2017 after it started in 2015. Brian Azzarello (Wonder Woman – Blood, Wonder Woman – Guts) also helped Miller devise a more balanced plot this time than his past efforts of writing senseless superhero violence.

Artist Andy Kubert (Before Watchmen – Nite Owl, Damian – Son of Batman) draws core story from all issues while Klaus Janson returned to work on tie-in shorts, also set on the same alternate reality of Earth-31 from DC Multiverse.

Whereas "The Dark Knight Returns" kind of expected all readers to assume the worst have happened to our vigilante hero before they even began and "The Dark Knight Strikes Again" just started throwing things at us without any explanation, DKIII actually tries to dive slightly deeper than before while leaving possibilities for a sequel.

Aside from regular primary character of this series, AquamanThe FlashGreen Lantern Hal Jordan, Hawkman and Hawkgirl appeared throughout the story. Hopefully, we will see young Jonathan grow up to be Superboy as his elder sister becomes a Supergirl in this brave-new world.
