Mighty Avengers – The Ultron Initiative | Comics

Iron Man assembles Mighty Avengers, a team of A-list members of Avengers and Ultron returns for ultimate revenge.

By the end of superhero "Civil War", Tony Stark became new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and he asks Carol Danvers to lead a new team of Mighty Avengers. Danvers suggest for an all-powerhouse team with everyone level nine or higher but Tony wants to have some team dynamics within the mix by adding a few members who are street-savvy.

They start with Wonder Man and Wasp from original Avengers team before moving to Sentry, which Carol is very skeptical about. Given his time with New Avengers, Tony realizes that they need a ninja, someone like Maya Lopez but since she is a fugitive on run right now, they go for Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow instead.

When it comes to choosing substitute for a Thor and Wolverine, Carol took him to Ares, God of War and though he didn't initially wanted to comply, Iron Man managed to strike a deal with him. In between their recruitment, Tony has been receiving and responding to many emergency reports from around the globe about natural calamities.

Immediately after their formation, Tony and his allies get busy to deal with a situation in Manhattan where a group of monstrous creatures show up and causing mayhem. While fighting, Simon Williams pointed out that Mole Man could be behind this and he is proven right when Harvey Elder comes out threatening them.

All of a sudden, Iron Man's armor starts warping and after blasting everyone off nearby with a repulsor charge, a female figure appears in that place. When it is confirmed that she was the one responsible for their home being destroyed, Mole Man sends his entire army after her only to be repelled and being completely molten into goo.

Despite Ms. Marvel not wanting to engage, an attempt to attack her by Ares and Sentry has led them both struck with lighting but the latter still pursues to have his axe broken and zapped even harder. Though no one had the slightest idea who that silver-skinned woman was, Janet van Dyne confronted her to confirm it to be Ultron.

Thinking Tony is still trapped within its shell and not dead yet, Carol orders her team to retreat as they can't even go near it and decides to come up with a better plan of attack. Leaving Sentry behind to deal with Ultron, she leads her crew to S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier looking for Henry Pym, who created the menacing murder bot years ago.

Hank was busy spending time with Tigra and ignoring calls but then S.H.I.E.L.D. agents were sent in to fetch him. To gain an upper hand in fight, Ultron took over the Helicarrier and send it crushing down. Sentry eventually saved it from falling with help from his fellow Avengers and Natasha takes charge when Maria Hill is knocked out.

To make their worst nightmare come true, a drone similar to original Iron Man armor called Starktech 9 flies in to inform that Tony Stark is dead, which is confirmed by Hank as he helped Tony create it as a fail-safe program for crisis like this.

Upon explaining how Ultron is manipulating weather using a group of satellites, Bob and Simon totally trashed them off. She then announces to initiate "Plan B", which is to cause a complete blackout throughout New York by releasing an electromagnetic pulse and then breaking into Stark Tower to get to Lindy Reynolds, wife of Sentry.

Running parallel to New Avengers comic-book series, writer Brian Michael Bendis (House of M, Secret War) and artist Frank Cho (Marvel Knights Spider-Man – Venomous, Savage Wolverine – Kill Island) was roped in by Marvel Comics to work on Mighty Avengers team comprised of registered superheroes, as part of Fifty State Initiative.

"The Ultron Initiative" marks the first storyline in a brand-new monthly ongoing publication started in 2007 and collects first six issues from first volume of release. After gathering some A-list Avengers members, Bendis made things more interesting by tossing in one of their biggest threat ever, who returned to end all life on Earth.

In post-Civil War period, Iron Man is Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. now and he puts Ms. Marvel in charge of his new team. Although their first mission starts with facing Mole Man and his army of Moloids, soon they are confronted by a literal ghost from past in form of Ultron and none of them has expected him to make a comeback like this.

Among all of Tony's fellow heroes, Ares comes out as most unusual addition to Mighty Avengers but proved to be very resourceful when it comes to make strategic plans. Reassembling for their next adventure in "Venom Bomb", Stark and his team will slowly be heading towards the culmination of a major "Secret Invasion".

Straczynski's attempt to bring a major paranormal character as Mephisto into a Spider-Man story for creating a greater impact was a move they all planned long before and he decided to execute it before he finished his run on the series. Although many have initially protested against the idea but in a long-run, it created a burden for the hero to carry around.

In the aftermath of this story, the series sees a legendary run in "Brand New Day", which started a new status quo for everyone's favorite wall-crawler and his friends. Mary Jane Watson also stays around without her and Peter hooking up again. Plus, new characters like Carlie Cooper, Daily Bugle's new owner Dexter Bennett and Menace are introduced.

Superman – Last Son of Krypton | Comics

In Fortress of Solitude, Superman confronts the A.I. likeness of his late father Jor-El after some time and he asks him if he enjoys living among humans while reminding that he is not one of them though. Later at Daily Planet, he sees Perry White giving photographer Jimmy Olsen for missing out a shot from a recent rampage of Gorilla Grodd.

Clark steps in to defend his buddy getting roasted for losing a shot to their rival paper Daily Star and Perry then sends the boy to get him some coffee. As he was lecturing Kent about how things were back in the days, Clark sees a strange meteor heading towards Metropolis in distant and immediately changes into Superman to stop that.

He rushed at it, as fast as he could, then caught it in midair and eventually stopped it from causing widespread damage. Turns out, it was actually a space vessel carrying a young boy who is taken to Metropolis lab by Department of Metahuman Affairs.

Big Blue talks to director Sarge Steel about where the boy might be from but then he starts speaking Kryptonian language and displaying impressive physical feat. Taking an interest on the child, he goes to Lois Lane to talk about it and even hinted at his willingness of adopting the kid out of responsibility he feels for a descendant of his home planet.

Next morning, they moved the boy to another location and a pissed off Superman shows up at Washington, D.C., demanding to know his whereabouts to Sarge Steel who clearly ignored to inform him. So, he breaks the kid out from transfer route and showed up to his parents' doorsteps at Smallville asking how they adopted him back then.

Kal-El unsuccessfully tries to figure out who this boy is at Fortress of Solitude but it was suggested that some records may not have survived. Lois is still uneasy about adoption as she wonders whether or not they would be a suitable parent to a Kryptonian child. A press conference is called to publicly leave the child in the care of Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

Lex Luthor has been keeping tabs on the whole development, sends out Bizarro to fetch him this "Super-Boy" and his backward brute starts rampaging through Metropolis. Their clash threw a school bus on top of the boy and though shaken if fear, he remains unscratched. Lois decides to give him a proper Earth name and chooses Christopher.

Meanwhile, Kryptonian super criminals General Zod, Ursa and Non comes out of Phantom Zone prison in three meteor pods at Fortress of Solitude, looking for the boy. Zod activates a holographic image of Jor-El via Sunstone crystal to learn his own legacy on Krypton only to react in anger knowing that they are considered as criminals.

Lois and Clark bring Chris Kent to workplace to introduce him to their coworkers but then Daily Planet is attacked. As he was about to change into Man of Steel, Non tackles him out of window and Zod joining shortly to beat him up some more. Ursa goes after Lois to get the child from her, who turns out to be her own son named Lor-Zod.

Soon, dozens of space pods starts raining down from sky with exiled Kryptonians of Phantom Zone and a scientist among them, Jax-Ur sends Superman into the Zone. Within that inter-dimensional realm, he is greeted by a wandering Mon-El, who then helped Big Blue fight his way out of ultimate purgatory to leave for Earth.

Upon returning, he discovers Metropolis is in ruins by Zod and his Kryptonian followers with many of his allies being taken captive. So, Kal-El approaches his greatest enemy Lex Luthor and his newly reformed Superman Revenge Squad consisting Bizarro, Metallo and Parasite to fight back these Kryptonian outlaws who has taken over the world.

New Avengers – Illuminati | Comics

Though members of Illuminati were united to take on greatest threats, they are torn apart by idea of a "Secret Invasion".

In the aftermath of Kree-Skrull War, King T'Challa AKA Black Panther has invited Black Bolt, Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Namor and Professor X to Wakanda. Tony Stark believes they are partially responsible for what happened a week earlier as they all had some knowledge of their enemy but had no formation to stop them.

To his proposal for all groups of heroes to unite for a cause, Namor points out that there will be issue regarding leadership and not everyone will want to join them. Except for Reed Richards, both Strange and Xavier completely disagrees to this idea. However, none could debunk the idea of an oncoming invasion from enemy in future.

When time came to vote for keeping it all between them and continue working in secret but only T'Challa backs out, thus Illuminati is formed. Right after forming, these five travels to Skrull Throneworld and warn Emperor Dorrek VII to stay away from Earth or face consequences but he simply chooses to ignore and threatens their life.

In a show of force, Black Bolt destroyed their ship using his quasi-sonic scream and attempted to return home but got captured instead. After being examined and tortured for a while, Tony finally managed to lead them all to escape back home knowing there will be more attack but not before Skrulls collected important data on them.

New Avengers – Illuminati | Comics

They eventually took care of Infinity Gems by becoming their protectors, convinced Beyonder to self exile and groomed a Kree warrior to be Marvel Boy. Years later, when Hulk decimated Las Vegas in a rampage, Tony proposes his group that they throw him in space since there was no cure known to them for him but Namor rebelled angrily.

Without Xavier, Illuminati came together once again after House of M was over and Tony revealed to them about how U.S. government is planning for a Superhuman Registration Act. Hearing how things can lead to a superhero "Civil War", only Reed came to his support with Black Bolt, Strange and Namor walked out disagreeing.

New Avengers was split and Tony formed a government sponsored Mighty Avengers after asserting position as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. His former teammate Spider-Woman showed up with a corpse of a Skrull that was posing as Elektra, implying that ranks of superhero groups have been infiltrated with sleeper agents for invasion.

He then took the dead body to show to his fellow Illuminati members, believing it has something to do with their visit to Skrull home-world from many years ago. What is even more baffling to them is that it was able to remain undetected from Wolverine's mutant abilities, Spider-Man's senses and Doctor Strange's magic for too long.

Reed proposes to run an autopsy and dissect the corpse into molecular level to determine how to detect them. Both Charles Xavier and Prince Namor suggest that it could all be a solo operation even that they just found. Tony points out how everything has been upside down for past few years as they were being manipulated from within.

As they were arguing about what to do now, Blackagar Boltagon is revealed itself to be a Super-Skrull hiding among them all along. Immediately after revealing, it attacks them all and claims that Earth has already been taken over. Iron Man and his allies realize that this shape-shifting alien imposter is too-powerful for them to take down.

The Walking Dead – Made To Suffer | Comics

The Governor was found severely crippled with several limbs missing and taken care of by his men who had him rescued from a vengeful Michonne in the nick of time who was about to painfully torture him to death. After they barely patched him up with help from a former army medic named Bob, The Governor eventually survives. He wakes up a week after in Woodbury hospital and then waits for his man Caesar Martinez to return.

Caesar was sent with Rick Grimes and his group to follow them back to their home as a double agent for him and to locate the prison facility where the survivors were currently residing. After some searching, his men found Caesar zombified in the field. Apparently, he was killed by Rick who ran over Dale's RV on Martinez and then strangled to death when he found that the latter was going back to Woodbury.

The Governor then successfully convinces the townspeople of Woodbury to attack the prison by telling them a false story about the prison dwellers being a very aggressive and savage band of folks. He also showed Martinez's zombified decapitated head to them to prove his claims, which really shocks a lot of them. As his search parties kept looking for the prison, The Governor prepares himself by practicing shooting even though his right arm was off.

Meanwhile, he was spending time with his own zombified niece Penny and kisses her after pulling out her teeth only to throw up immediately. Then he learned that a group of soldiers from Woodbury was killed by the prison group at the National Guard Station during a confrontation of their supply run. This angers The Governor and his men to attack the prison but they wait for long. With heavy vehicles and armory they approached at the prison as one of Governor’s men was successful in locating it after weeks of searching and mapping the surrounding areas.

During the first attack, Andrea climbs on the guard tower and devastates the Woodbury forces by shooting at them. The remaining survivors debate as to run away or to fight back. Tyreese and Michonne are also captured by Governor's men while trying to turn the tides of the battle and their fate seems to be quite unsure at this point. What happens next between the two group is a savage contest of massacring each other till no one is left.

The Walking Dead – Made To Suffer

Following the events of “The Calm Before”, there comes “Made To Suffer” storyline that collects issue #43-48 of The Walking Dead monthly ongoing comic-book series from Image Comics in 2008. It also is the one volume that features the highest amount of deaths in the panels which is later surpassed by the “All Out War” story arc. Series creator and writer Robert Kirkman (Outcast, The Astounding Wolf-Man) and artist Charlie Adlard (Judge Dredd, The X-Files) created this six part plot that is succeeded by "Here We Remain" storyline which is next to this one.

Almost Dead Already

The eighth episode from Season 3 of AMC's The Walking Dead TV Series also shares the same name of the storyline. However, that episode did not feature the attack of Woodbury people led by The Governor on Rick's prison. Since AMC's TV adaptation is solely based on the source material of Robert Kirkman's work on the comics series, the third season seemed like a stretch as it concluded to Season 4 for viewers to find out what threat The Governor will pose on Rick's group. The key-elements of the violent nature of the conflict that took place on the arc was toned down for television audience when it was aired.
